8 Months and $1M Later: How One First-Time Ecommerce Entrepreneur Made his Fortune

Today, there are so many apps and other online resources that make starting a successful eCommerce business into something that virtually anyone can do. Thanks to its many helpful features which make drop shipping easier, Oberlo has facilitated thousands of ecommerce success stories. We truly believe that ecommerce entrepreneurship has the potential to change lives for the better with minimal risk and the prospect of major returns. To really drive this point home, Oberlo has enlisted some of its most successful ecommerce business owners to share their inspiring stories and strategies for achieving ecommerce success. Below you’ll find the story of an ecommerce entrepreneur who has used Oberlo to launch and run his own successful ecommerce business.

The First-Timer Turned Successful Ecommerce Entrepreneur

Oberlo.com co-founder Tomas Slimas recently spoke with Irwin Dominguez from San Diego about his ecommerce success and his experience using the app. By sharing his insights with readers he hopes to convince more people to pursue eCommerce entrepreneurship. You too can create your own ecommerce success story.

Within just 8 months of starting his drop shipping business, Irwin had already earned $1,000,000 in sales. As one of the most successful ecommerce entrepreneurs who uses Oberlo, Irwin’s main piece of advice is, “If I started ecommerce all over again, I would do it sooner.” If you’re looking to become a successful ecommerce entrepreneur, the best time to start is now.

Dominguez strongly believes that if he had started even just one year earlier, his sales would’ve grown much higher. “There just wouldn’t be so much competition,” says Irwin. But, he agrees that there are still plenty of opportunities to become a successful ecommerce dropshipper, which is all the more reason why people shouldn’t wait to jump on this lucrative venture.

With the correct mindset, and a little bit of creativity, anything is possible. Dominguez also emphasizes, “I can’t find a reason why people shouldn’t give ecommerce entrepreneurship a try. With all the technology out there, it costs no money to get started and it couldn’t be any simpler. You literally have nothing to lose. And I’m surprised more people don’t use this to their benefit.” Your life as an ecommerce entrepreneur can start today — Oberlo is totally free to try

Ecommerce Success Stories – How did you get started in Dropshipping Ecommerce?

A very good friend of mine decided to become an ecommerce entrepreneur a few months before I had even heard of drop shipping. When he started telling me the figures he was pulling in as a successful ecommerce entrepreneur, it made me want to try cashing in on the opportunity as well.

I literally just opened a Shopify account, created my store, added a few dropshipped products with Oberlo, and that’s it. I didn’t do a lot of reading or researching because I always try to learn by doing. Dropshipping ecommerce success requires very little capital and allows you to experiment a lot. This is what I love about it the most.

I do have to admit, though, that I Google a lot of questions that come up as I’m learning by doing.

Ecommerce Success Stories – What were you doing before starting your successful Drop Shipping Business?

Before running a successful drop shipping business I was a local marketing consultant helping landscapers and plastic surgeons find more customers on the Internet.

And just for the record, I don’t miss local consulting ONE BIT.

Irwin loves travelling and working on the go. You can learn how to run a business whilst traveling here.

Ecommerce Success Stories – Do you remember your first sale and where it came from?

Yeah, it came just 3 days after my store launch. Like most of my site traffic, it came from Facebook Ads.

Honestly, I wasn’t super-excited when it happened. I was doing Facebook Ads and somehow expected I would eventually receive an order. Also, spending way too much on ads to get that first sale deflated any first-order “high” I might have felt.

There are many ecommerce success stories associated with using Facebook Ads. What was your experience with Facebook Ads before your dropshipping success? How did you learn to use them?

I have dabbled with Facebook advertising over the years but never really “tried” until recently. Now, I can’t live without it!

The most difficult part for me was actually getting started running Facebook ads — I’ve listened to so many webinars and read so many blog posts over the years, but never really focused on Facebook ads until I got started with dropshipping. I told myself this time around that I had to change my attitude about it if I was going to run a successful ecommerce business, and in just a few short months I felt like a brand new person. I believe this is the biggest reason I experienced ecommerce success with Facebook advertising. I’m so glad I didn’t give up!

Facebook is great because the targeting is super-awesome. It just takes time to crack the code so your earnings cover the advertising costs. Once you understand how Facebook ads work, you’ll have a great chance to achieve ecommerce success.

Ecommerce Success Stories – What keeps you motivated as an ecommerce entrepreneur? Why did you want to achieve ecommerce success so badly?

My inspiration is my wife — I wouldn’t be doing the things I’m doing if it weren’t for her. I have a really down-to-earth approach to making a living. I’m not chasing luxury cars or glitzy mansions, I just want to provide for my family so we never worry about money and so my wife doesn’t need to work if she doesn’t want to.

successful drop shipping business - dropshipping success

As an ecommerce entrepreneur, what is your sales-per-day record as a successful eCommerce business ?

The record was around $30,000 in one day, I hit it while scaling a hot selling product. Current revenues right now are around $10,000 per day, but I hope I will get it back up shortly.

There are always highs and lows. You find a target audience that loves your product, but eventually you reach them all and have to look for another audience or offer them another product. Especially in small businesses, that search takes time and creates sales fluctuations. If you’re looking to run a successful ecommerce business it’s important that you continue to test and improve your campaigns — there will always be room for improvement.

If you started all over again, what would you do differently as an ecommerce entrepreneur?

Set dropshipping processes in place as soon as you can. You should usually start thinking about them just after validating your product idea and making a few sales.

The beauty of the internet is you can sell to most people on the planet right now. If you find the right offer and right audience you can generate a lot of sales quickly — something I was able to experience, but because I wasn’t ready for the flood of orders we received we messed up a lot of them and made a lot of customers upset. So try and have your shipping procedures in place as soon as possible, it’ll really help you as an ecommerce entrepreneur.

As an ecommerce entrepreneur, what’s your top recommendation to anyone looking to start a successful eCommerce business?

If I started ecommerce all over again, I would start sooner. I waited a full month-and-a-half after my good friend told me about his ecommerce success. It costs no money to launch a store and it’s so “simple” to get started with all the technology available right now — just get started, you literally have nothing to lose.

Opportunity, yes — I wish I started this sooner because if I were doing this even just one year earlier, there would’ve been a lot less competition; I would’ve made a lot more money; and I could have established myself in other niches. But overall, there are still plenty of opportunities — you just have to be a little more creative with marketing.

Great stuff, thank you Tomas and Irwin!

Any recommendations on how much money you should be putting into Facebook ads? Experiments I’ve done with about $20/day have not been very successful and I’ve been hearing that most times you want to put a lot more in to get a good return. Thoughts?

  • Jason King

Awesome story. I take it he is using ali express and your software to filfill orders quickly?

  • sarah

Hello. Great motivation role. I hope I also get to even a fourth of this success. Can someone advise if it can be recommended to use two to three different suppliers for 1 single store? if so how would you manage the returns?

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Sarah, you can definitely use more than one supplier for a single store, but try and go with suppliers that have good ratings (if you choose to fulfill from Ali Express) or whatever website you choose (there are so many out there nowadays) to mitigate the risk that the supplier will send out the wrong product or take forever with shipping. Returns will happen, doesn’t matter if you have the best supplier’s in the world, it’s the cost of doing business. Good luck!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Thanks! Yes, my VAs use Oberlo for Ali Express fulfillment. Oberlo is a SWEET app, a must if you dropship with Shopify IMO.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Thank you! If you’re first starting or if you’re just starting out in a new niche, most of the time I run $5 adsets, BUT I make sure I’m happy with the targeting before I get started. Make sure you really drill down to who you think the ideal audience is for your offer. Also, I run more than one adset when first testing a new niche/ new offer; I usually run like 3+ adsets testing different “types” of interests – this gives me a better feeling that I tried to hit the niche from different angles because not all “buyer-type” interests act the same in each niche. For example, a magazine-type interest might be great buyers in Niche A, but not for Niche B – you always have to keep testing and find out what works for you. My method is a mix of different things I learned and tried on my own and until recently I finally found something I feel comfortable doing – you’ll eventually find your method too. Keep pushing forward, keep learning – it will pay off! Good luck!

  • Frank

    Hi Irwin,

Thanks for sharing your amazing story! Got some questions if you don’t mind:

    1. Can you share some tips on finding hot, profitable products? I know that we can get tons of ideas from Amazon, AliExpress, WatchCount, etc, but I was wondering if you could share your exact thought process to find the hot products for your $1 million store.

    2. How did you learn about FB advertising? I’m very familiar with the basic stuff like creating ads, creating custom audiences, lookalike audiences, installing pixels, etc. It’s the scaling part that I’m still struggling with. Would love your insights… 🙂

    3. Do you manually create your FB ads, or do you use automation tools such as Qwaya or AdEspresso?

    4. What’s the best way to find profitable FB interests/targeting? I think it’s crucial to do it right….

    5. Is email marketing a big driver of your $1 million revenue? If so, what emails do you send to people, and how frequent?

  • Nigel Allen

Great write up – inspired me to keep trying. Thanks for sharing.

Can I ask which theme you use on Lady Lux please?

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

Hey Irwin! Well done! its great to see hard work pay off. Im just starting with Shopify and having heaps of fun.

Im a Canadian who love traveling. 🙂 At the moment i’m in Australia and have been traveling the world for the past year 🙂

Hope to create a sustainable income 🙂

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

He is using the free template called Brooklyn you can find it in the template store! 🙂 I also use it. https://byronbutch.com/

  • Nigel Allen

    Much appreciated – thank you.

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

Anytime Nigel. 🙂 All the best. Im also struggling but never giving up 🙂

  • Mitch Cooling

Hi there Irwin. Adding on to this topic, I have tested products from a few of my Ali Express suppliers, and every single product is shipped in a package that says the Ali value of the product. So if I’m selling a piece of jewellery off my site for $20, it might show up as a value of $3 on the packaging. Have you had any problems with this/ found a way around it?

Do you also have any problems from customers when items in a single order from multiple suppliers show up at different times, all without your brands name on it?

  • Niklaus Mikaelson

Nice to see you visited India ( Tajmahal ) :p 🙂

  • Irwin Dominguez

Thanks! It’s one of my favorite countries I ever visited!

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hey Frank,

    1) I would focus on the audience first, THEN find something you think they would want – by searching Amazon, etc. This way has worked wonders for me.

    2) I took a few courses, listened to several podcasts, read several blogs. A really good course is Physical Product System by Matt Schmitt, SOLID,SOLID course on ecommerce which includes FB training.

    3) For the most part it’s manual, but I use Qwaya too to save me some time (but it’s not mandatory to use IMO – just a luxury).

    4) I just dig, dig, dig – if you see other people selling to that niche you know there’s money there. Don’t be a pioneer, go for a niche that already has proven buyers

    5) Email surprisingly is not for me. I email a few times a month when there’s an in-store special, not too often though, I don’t want to burn the list.

Take care and go get it!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Thanks Daniel! I’m in Iceland right now (traveling is a love of mine, too)! Have fun in Australia!

  • Dky Che Zul

@Irwindominguez, how you deal with paypal to setup you bussiness account? What they asked you to provided? I’m new, please help

  • Howie

A simple quick question to ask Irwin.

When you first testing a new niche, would you start with page post engagement or website conversion ?

  • Billls4Charities

A question to Irwin and Tomas. What I understood is that Obelro works with AliExpress for dropshipping. Do you need to contact sellers before importing products asking them whether they dropship or not?

  • Perry

Hi Irwin, I’m stuck on $2k per day for a few months, can’t scale over that, can you offer some tips and tricks for scaling to reach 10k a day? Thanks 🙂

  • Craig

Hi Irwin, if you could please expand on your types of targeting when first testing. Do you do 1, broad, 1 group of say magazines and one flex with broad and precise mixed? there are so many ways that I get overwhelmed. I have so many designs to test and I just want to know the best way to see if it’s a winner. Thanks

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hey Perry, you’re right there – only a handful of sales a way. Are these consistent sales of the same products that make up the 2k/ day or are these different offers? Are you utilizing website conversion ads for products that sell more than 15 items/ day? Depending on what makes up the 2k/ day, you can try different strategies. I would try to scale the consistent sellers with WC ads if you haven’t already. Or try to sell that niche more products; if you can’t find other items to sell your niche either ask a supplier to make one for you (they will, especially if you have a good relationship with them) or make t-shirts/ mugs/ other items for them. You’re right there, just need to figure out how to get those other sales.

  • Irwin Dominguez

You don’t need to contact the sellers, Oberlo is ready to use with any supplier you want. BUT, make sure and check out their reviews first to mitigate the risk of working with a horrible supplier. Not all suppliers are created equally, unfortunately.

  • Irwin Dominguez

I personally start with PPE still. Works for me and I’ll keep doing it until it stops working. BUT..try other stuff too b/c I know some people that start with WC that do very well.

  • Irwin Dominguez

I just follow the setup instructions, I don’t do anything else different. Good luck and hopefully you can get Paypal to work for you.

  • Erick

    Hi Irwin!

I have two quick question. Do you use carousel ads or one product picture ads when using facebook ads?

Do you have any tips on finding the right interests to target? That’s my biggest challenge now i’m facing

    Thank you

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Erick, it varies but when first starting with an offer I usually start with single product ads for FB. As far as finding an interest, make sure you start digging the interests to target after validating people are spending money in the niche. Look for other FB pages with a lot of engagement with “obvious” signs people are buying and if that’s a market you want to enter, then you start digging and looking for the interests to target. Keep digging b/c if other people are able to sell on FB, then you should too – only question you have to ask yourself is HOW do I get it to work for you since the question of “do these people buy” is already answered. Good luck!

  • Alvin Bates

You mention using FB to sell, what are your thoughts on Pintrest? Did you use them at all? What was your experience if you did? Thanks!

  • Classycaramelgirl

So awesome. I just started. I would love to know his site URL so I can check it out 🙂

  • Erick

Thank you the response Irwin! You really helped a lot 🙂

Do you have a certain number of interests you aim for? And do you have a certain amount of reach you aim for as well? Like for example: 1,000,000 is the minimum of potential reach total from interests

  • Miles

What does it mean to “focus on the audience first” ? I understand you don’t want to give away any secrets, but I just don’t know what you mean here!

  • Miles

    Hi Irwin,

Not sure if my last question was posted so trying again. You’re advice is to find an audience (a buying one) first. Frankly, not sure what advice you could add? What does it mean to find an audience?? Thanks!

  • He probably meant to test various audiences until you find one that buys (converts) at a reasonable price. You could make a list of audiences you think would be interested in your product, then run a test for each of them and see which one buys the most for the least advertising budget.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hey Miles, Tomas hit the nail on the head. Look for an audience (hockey players, etc) and focus on serving them but validate that those people actually buy, especially on FB. There are so many ways of doing that, check out other FB pages catered to “hockey players” and see if they’re “buying” (a lot of likes, comments, etc on “sales” posts.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Not a secret, Miles – I chimed in on your other post. Good luck – you’ll find an audience that “buys” after doing research.

  • Perry

    Hi Irwin,
I am 1 day old into this business and was wondering when we use oberlo to export products from Alibaba, are we entitled to use their photos on our site? All the websites I’ve seen so far are pretty classy which makes me wonder where people like you get your pictures from without having to deal with copyright problems? The corporate websites use tailored models/photographers etc for their websites but I hardly have that kind of capital.

  • Niklaus Mikaelson

    I am from India itself.

  • Niklaus Mikaelson

I have an idea. If you are open to ideas. We can talk…:)

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hi Alvin,

I haven’t tried Pinterest yet, but I plan to soon as one of my target markets “hang out there”. I can tell you one thing though, FB works for practically anything you sell whether it’s physical products, consulting services; even pizza to local customers. Anyways, take care!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Craig, let me tell you something that will help you – STICK WITH ONE METHOD. I’ve been using the same “simple” method taught to me several months ago and it hasn’t failed yet. If people see an item they HAVE to buy they’ll buy it if there’s a buy button, it’s as simple as that. Find an audience (that you already knows that buys – easier to start this way), sell them something, see if they buy. Not trying to oversimplify but this is how you have to approach it. And just pick different audiences to try out; build something that makes sense to you and just hit it hard. Good luck with the designs!

  • Craig

Thanks for replying. Care to share the method you use 🙂

  • Walter Nelvis

When hiring a VA, How do you know what to look for? Do you just have your financial info saved on to your account and just give the VA access to everything?

  • White guy

    Hi Irwin,

Just wondering where you find the acutal erchadise to sell?

  • White guy

    Hi Irwin & Thomas

Just curious as to where you find suppliers? And is there any sort of crash coarse on this that i can read up on? Some of the lingo im not familiar with

  • cfingram

I just placed my first Facebook Ad, so far, only got 17 Conversions, a reach of 683 with 0 sales. 🙁

  • cfingram

Some sellers won’t ship to an address that is different than your own though right? so essentially, you do need to verify if they will ship to another address other than your own that matches your Aliexpress account….and also, it’s good to mention that you are shipping a dropshipping order so to limit the amount of marketing materials used in the shipments (at least, that’s what I was told to do).

  • cfingram

Maybe that’s why I didn’t get one sale,… I will try Page Post Engagement next…. gahhh I worry that my little experiments and mistakes right in the beginning like this is going to cost me and arm and a leg, with no return. Family of six living on one income, it’s a struggle!! That’s why I’m wanting to do this but do it without it putting us in a bad situation!

  • Perry

Yeah, same question, and to add to that, is Alibaba express considered a supplier?

  • Irwin Dominguez

Stick with it! I don’t know if you went to University, but the average tuition cost is around 20K for 4 years with NO GUARANTEE you’ll get your money back. Right now, this is your FB ads tuition and I can almost guarantee you that you can spend A LOT less than 20K and get a PHENOMENAL return on your investment. Keep learning, keep doing, and don’t give up – I promise it will pay off. Don’t wait years like I did to find out how powerful FB ads are! Now go get it! 🙂 Good luck!

  • Louie Prescott

Hey guys, this write up got me really excited about using this service, until I tried looking up Irwin on line and finding out a bit more. Thing is, there’s nothing really on you (Irwin). Last one tweet was a few months ago and before that it was a year. (But you manage to post a mere hours after someone commenting) on this article.Other write ups just focus on how you’re a internet marketer, nothing about running an e-commerce business. Now I’m not trying to hate, but where’s the pudding? never mind the proof. I want to trust a company like this or even believe someone succeeding using these tools. Guess not.
I want to believe. All I’m saying is look Irwin up guys. If there’s more info please link (Within the next day or two) until then, I’m just gonna assume you’re pulling the wool over everyone here.

  • Louie Prescott

Wow guy so you’re stuck on 2k per day, AND you’re one day old into this business? That’s really nice man, real nice, real real real nice.

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

Hey louie… i thought that at first as well but i did some digging and found this.. The #s speak for them selves. … 4,220 visitors per day.

  • Louie Prescott

Hey Daniel Vanderkruk, thanks for writing but truth be told, who’s numbers? Could be anyone. Show me an article or info linking him to an e-commerce business. Did you check his Facebook? Twitter? No business registered in SaN Diego? Really?
So I’m suppose to believe some ambiguous screen shot (not even a link) that you post. If this was legit, there would be no questions or digging. It would just be out there.
Now I don’t trust you guys.

  • Perry

No, This is a different Perry 😀

  • Howie

For No.2, which Matt Schmidt course are you referring to?

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

I guess you have a good point.. It could be anyone running Ladylux. But I am using the Oberlo app and it is simple, easy, and affective way to import ali products .. thats what this article is really promoting.. The app.

You can look at any shopify business here and see the the flow of traffic rank. this is where I see who is really making sales and doing well and who is full of shit.

Do you have a shop Louie?

  • Daniel Vanderkruk

This app is for Aliexpress. Which is kind of like Alibaba

  • Perry

Thanks! So then if we use Alibaba, there is a possibility right that we are basically dropshopping from another dropshopper based in China?

  • cfingram

2 year community college degree in Canada, and that was a $4k investment about 18 years ago. Now I feel old, thanks! LOL I do understand your point, there’s a tremendous investment into a degree, and the return is mediocre at the outrageous costs of schooling in the USA nowadays. My problem is, my funds are EXTREMELY limited at the moment, experimenting is a luxury. I know it’s difficult for most people to understand as not very many are in my shoes. I’m not giving up, I’m just kinda of a bit worried about all the costs involved, involving the monthly cost of Shopify, Oberlo (which I haven’t even signed up for yet), email capturing app (that’s going to be a MUST for repeat customers and building a lucrative business), logo creation (I got a cheap one for now but branding is also important), etc….. lots and lots of work ahead. I’m NOT afraid of hard work, I do it already (residential/commercial Part Time cleaner and mom of four kids), I just want to work hard but SMARTER. I’m tired of the failed attempts at being successful, I want something tangible and lucrative enough to provide for my family and help our local community where ever we live. So much information out there but lots of it is not free, I see lots of “Buy this package to learn how to blah blah blah”…I totally get why they do it, they are making money! However, I legitimately cannot swing those types of costs….I’m in a tough spot…many of you young entrepreneurs don’t have four little mouths to feed 🙂 I’m a old fart/bloomer at this game compared to many of you. LOL I’ve been busy raising kids for the past 10 years, so my time hasn’t been invested in learning all of the latest technology, online marketing, seo, etc… I’m at a disadvantage, got huge challenges ahead of me , but giving up is NOT in my blood, never really has been. Anyway, I just posted my second ad today, I targeted a bit more strategically this time.

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hi Louie,

Believe it or not, there are people out there in this world that are doing great online/ business in general and aren’t active online at all. For example, my good buddy that introduced me to ecom in Nov 2015 does 1M/ month and he isn’t active online at all in his social media (and there are people doing even bigger numbers with drop shipping). And – the reason I reply to comments in this thread (while I’m on vacation in Iceland btw) is b/c I remember how it was when I saw someone’s “success” story and I had questions as a newbie – I was there not too long ago. You can believe what you want to believe – I just want people to know that “anything” is possible online and tools like Shopify and Oberlo just make it easier to achieve the goals you have. Take care and I hope you hit the goals you want to hit for yourself and your business.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Just find them on Ali Express to begin with and make sure to choose suppliers that have good ratings (look for multiple diamonds/ crowns) for their rating level.

  • Irwin Dominguez

I look for people with experience for what I need them to do, a 90% success rate, and they must chat with me on Skype so I can see their “eyes” and try to get a feel for what kind of person they are.

  • cfingram

Cool points for responding 🙂 and I’m listening to every word you are saying…I’m in those beginner shoes and really eager to learn. Any free guides out there for me to get my hands on to learn/read/watch? I see a ton of webinars offering courses at a cost but you know my situation from previous post 🙂

  • cfingram

Enjoy your vacation! Iceland is a place me and hubby would love to visit someday.

  • Perry

Hey Irwin or Tomas, could I get a bump for my initial post? I see Irwin was active a day ago. Would really appreciate some feedback.

  • Perry

Hey cfingram! I commend the hardwork your putting in and I’m sure its going to pay off along the way. I am from Canada too and I was wondering if you are planning to go through IRS to get a business license? As someone who is new to this as well, I am clueless as to whether I require a license to operate this sort of dropshipping business because being online our customer market could potentially reach outside of Canada too, so its not strictly made in Canada right. Wondering if you had any insight?

  • cfingram

Hello Perry! I was born in Canada but I’m now a United State Citizen living in the USA. I’m not familiar with how they do things there, but I would assume that yes, you would want to eventually do that.

  • cfingram

You want to sell worldwide, not just in Canada. There’s a lot more $$$ to be made by selling worldwide (or at least, several different Countries) and not just restricting yourself to one Country..after all, you are not shipping the product yourself, so it’s a lot less expensive this way 🙂 China ships to buyers for a lot less v.s. Canada/USA.

  • sbalster

Can you provide any insight into how to grow a Facebook business page to over 100K followers? Thanks!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Thanks, it’s a BEAUTIFUL country, it’s one of my top three I’ve visited – SO beautiful!

  • sarah

    Hi Irvin

Thank you for the helpful feedback.  Much appreciated.  I have one more question if you don’t mind.  I plan on offering free shipping and have some free product with shipping cost separately.  I leave in South Africa hence dealing with returns will be very difficult for me since my target market is overseas and I don’t have an address to have the goods returned to. What can I do.  Should I say that returns are not allow allowed.?

    Please advise

    Kind regards

Im having on my store visitors around 300 ppl a day but nobody buys anything.. I know there is a lot of variants why ppl are not buying like confusing website, charging shipping.. I would like to know if i can pull up shipping information from Aliexpress in order to have an accurate shipping fee.. is that possible? Bc on shopify you have to put in a general way.. I put $2 and $4.. Would be better look for always free shipping supplier and always offer free shipping?

  • tom jones

Hi Irwin, Congratulation on you sucess.I just wonder about one thing> Lets say you have 400 sales a day. How do you manage to fulfill one by one order in oberlo? You have a alipay account or you use a certain bulk software? Best regards Kris.

  • tom jones

You can send me detailed info here >sales@marketooo.com Highly appreciated. Kris

  • Irwin can probably answer this question himself, but I’m pretty sure he hires a Virtual Assistant for that. I’ve seen many job listings on Upwork.com for managing Oberlo orders.

  • Sean Anthony

What’s up Irwin – congrats on crushing it man. I’ve been running on my own store for the past week and currently average $60/day in sales using primarily WC ads and “free + shipping” offers. I love seeing stories like this, lights a fire under my a$$.

Few questions I have for you:

    1. Do you sell international or only US? And if international, what shipping method do you use?
    2. What kind of margins do you look for on your products?
    3. What kind of offers do you run in your ads? (F+S, discount + free shipping, retail price, etc.)

I’m trying to get to $300/day by 8/1 so i would love to hear how you scaled up so quickly. Congrats again Irwin!

  • tom jones

    Hi Tomas
Thanks for your answer. Did you do it that way too? Best regards.

  • Tom, we hired in-house specialists. We are located in Lithuania and salaries aren’t as high as in the US.

  • Hi @disqus_jEzf2YFiEs:disqus, I hope you don’t mind if I offer my insights too (I’m not sure if Irwin is still following the comments).

    1. I would at least test other countries. There are dozen of great markets with less competition, smaller CPA and more engaged audiences. For more details: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/dropshipping-outside-of-the-united-states/ — as for the shipping method: trackable China Post is OK.

    2. The average margin set by Oberlo user is around 2.00. However, I always suggest you first get to know the approx. cost per acquisition and then add it to your product margin. If you manage to get a customer below 15 USD per order and your margin is 20 USD, you can spend infinite amount of money as every order is profitable.

  • Sean Anthony

Thanks Tomas! As for traceable China post, which option is that? I see China post registered air mail and China post small parcel, and at the bottom of the aliexpress page it says that China post may not be tracked.

  • I’d refer to the information on AliExpress. If it says that China Post may not be tracked, you should probably believe. Though, I have many examples where China Post tracking codes can be traced door-to-door.

  • Sean Anthony

Thank you so much Tomas. BTW – I read your blog post about testing other countries outside the US… and oh my goodness, what a gold mine. I setup 15 ad sets yesterday for Australia, US, and Scandinavia. Both Australia and Scandinavia have been KILLING it for me!

  • Hi Tomas, which is better earning method? affiliate marketing or dropshipping?

  • Hi @rakhipathak:disqus – I’d say dropshipping. It’s much more predictable, scalable and long-term.

  • Awesome! Super excited to hear that 🙂

  • Demetrius Mathis

Im very interested in dropshipping. I like systems such as Oberlo. My only weakness is that I dont like details and tecky tasks of setting up a website. Is there a way around the details and still be successful at dropshipping

  • @demetriusmathis:disqus You could probably look for some help at https://experts.shopify.com/ or https://www.upwork.com I’m sure you’ll find dozens of experts who could do that for you.

  • ld345

A little late to the discussion, hah…but what you’re saying is certainly encouraging, thanks for sharing! I’m wondering where/how you learned to ‘crack the code’ for Facebook Ad targeting? Can you share some online resources, tutorials..have you written anything yourself? To branch off that, would you say that your FB ads were targeted more towards building a substantial Facebook fan page, or was it more just geared towards having people click to your website?

I literally just opened my store a day ago, ah! Trying to be active on Instagram, but I know there’s a lot of value on FB, too. 🙂

    Thanks for any tips!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Tom, I have a team of VAs that handle fulfillment for me. And for the products that sell large volumes consistently, I dropship directly from the supplier (I send them an excel spreadsheet with all the customer information).

  • Irwin Dominguez

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back from vacation and I’m playing catch-up! As far as free guides, there is just SO MUCH free and good information out there on FB ads – http://jonloomer.com is a great website on getting FB ads info – there are a plethora of others. What I suggest is you follow one person/ course/ source of information and stick to that and ONLY THAT until you get a good understanding of how things work (and ideally profit you can reinvest in trying different things on your own). The course that REALLY helped me was http://physicalproductsystem.com – Matt is the creator and he not only knows his stuff – he’s just an overall really good guy. Again, follow one person/ course /source and do JUST THAT until you get success. If you follow too many sources, you’ll get overwhelmed and you’ll most likely give up.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Demetrius, Shopify isn’t difficult to use at all. At first, it will take you a few hours to get accustomed to everything but after a while it gets really easy to use (like everything else you use; repetition is the mother of skill). And Oberlo just makes it super simple to fulfill. You just have to jump in and get started. Good luck!

  • Irwin Dominguez

Rakhi, I’ll chime in here – I’ve done both and both have solid earning potential. My advice is this – pick the one you enjoy most because that enjoyment will help you get through the learning curve. If you haven’t done either, pick one and just get started. They both literally take little “money” to get started BUT you will have to invest a lot of time learning and “failing” your way to success. Good luck!

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hey Sean,

    Regarding your questions:

    1. I do both and for international shipping it’s usually the base seller method.
    2. I look for at least 100%, but it varies depending on the strategy I use. But to keep things simple at the very least its 100%.
    3. It’s a combination of all of them – F+S works, Retail price but advertising a discount works… I use the retail price (discounted) method the most though. Honestly, if you have the right offer and the right audience, and you position the offer correctly, it doesn’t ultimately matter which method you use.

Regarding scaling quickly, again, it’s finding the right offer and right audience – not trying to over simplify but that’s all I do. Stick to one niche IMO until you find a winner or two there because IMO it takes a while to learn the FB targeting for different niches. That’s just me… I hope you hit that goal by 8/01… did you hit it yet?

  • Irwin Dominguez

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back from vacation and I’m catching up on a lot. Despite all that you’ve been through you’re still going and I can’t tell you how awesome that is. I can’t tell you how many people I know that have been in situations ‘better’ than yours and they still end up “giving up”. I’m so happy to see you getting after it – and it will pay off.

    How are your ads doing?

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hi Laura,

What helped me “crack the code”, honestly, was a lot of personal development (as corny as that sounds) AND following a solid course that I followed until I got it to work. The course I followed was http://physicalproductsystem.com; Matt is the course creator and he doesn’t only know his stuff, he’s a solid guy. Anyways, just learn AS MUCH as you can but with that being said, you will have to run ads to really learn – reading and taking notes can only take you so far.

My ads are mostly directed towards the sale. People on FB aren’t on there to shop (like they are on Google or Amazon.com) so the name of the game I’m playing is get them to buy on IMPULSE. Show the ideal audience something you think they will want to buy at the price you think they’ll buy it for – do solid market research; see what people are buying in the niche you are in. See if you can get the similar product on websites such as Aliexpress.com, setup your FB ad, and see how it goes.

Congratulations on opening your new store! Good luck and just get after it. People have the money to buy, the question you have to ask yourself is “how can I get them to buy from me”?

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Perry, I usually buy the product myself and take my own photos. You can use Aliexpress images and if there’s a problem with that, either FB or Shopify will let you know. With that being said, just jump in and see what happens. If you have to stop running ads due to using images “illegally”, you can just buy the product yourself and take your own images. Take action and just go for it! Good luck!

  • Alex

Hello Irwin, do you have a niche store or a general store?

  • George F Tesfa

Hi Irwin. What is your site name and where are you ?

  • sam

1000000 in sales equates to about 70 or 80k profit most likely. you have to deduct the cost of the product being drop shipped and the 18 percent amazon fee. if you are selling highly competitive items and constantly haveing to lower your prices to get customers than your margins can be even slimmer. there is money to be made but it is a lot of work and research to get make any sort of decent cash. it also requires spending hours apon hours looking for product suppliers of crap like baby toys and making purchases online…. which is incredibly dull.

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hey guys,

I just wanted to share this video. I was recently re-introduced to it a few days ago and I’ve watched it at least 100x/ day the last few days; I’ve just been looping it so it plays in the background. What Gary Vee says in the video is SO TRUE. For those of you that know Gary Vee, he cusses a little bit so don’t play this at work or around little ones… LOL:

TAKE MASSIVE ACTION EVERYONE! With tools like Shopify and Oberlo – there’s really no reason why anyone can’t get dropshipping to work. LET’S DO THIS!!!!!

  • ccmedia365

What products are you selling? This article never specifies what products or category.

  • Jezzel Yamada

Hi Irwin, I would love to learn from you. I want to start with eCommerce business but I dont know where to start. I hope I can get a chance to learn from you. -Jezzel-

  • Irwin Dominguez

Sam, you’re a little off on the profit number and you’re assuming I’m not selling more after this article was written. I don’t care about the money – the best part is the skill set and confidence I have acquired because it applies to any market and marketing channel. Take care.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Alex, I have both – take care.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Hi Jezzel, thanks! I don’t do any teaching or coaching but there are plenty of awesome resources to learn from including the course that got me started and helped me get here today: http://physicalproductsystem.com and FB groups like Kingpinning, etc. Good luck and take massive action.

  • Irwin Dominguez

Various products from shirts, jewelry, other accessories. Whatever my niches want, I give it to them, plain and simple.

  • Irwin Dominguez

I would be more concerned about your offer more than anything. If you have something people ultimately want to buy, as long as the price is reasonable and your site doesn’t look sketchy and everything works okay, you should be getting sales. Do some market research, find something people would want to buy and keep testing until you get it right. Good luck!

  • Leo Aurigae

    Hello Irwin.

Hope you don’t mind me asking, where do you get your suppliers?

Are they from Aliexpress only? or

Do you also have suppliers from other sources?

If yes, then can you give examples?

Lastly, have you ever had troubles with the payment security of Aliexpress such as, unauthorized transactions that you did not make. Causing your bank to block your card or something. What method of payment do you use? personal credit/debit card or business?

  • Jonathan Rosa

Hi Guys! I just launched my store pineapplemrkt.com any recommendations on getting sales started?

  • Hey Jonathan,

We run a community forum here at Oberlo and you can ask for store advice there. We even have a special category for that: http://ask.oberlo.com/t/your-store-feedback 🙂

  • timgoes

    Huge production.

  • Terry Blyth

Hi Is Matts course up to date with FB now. Or is it out dated? Not sure to buy this product?

  • Celisse Willis

I have a suggestion on your shipping question; use epacket. They’re actually supposed to be a sister to UPS/USPS that ships worldwide, the item(s) are tracked, & they’re always the cheapest shipping option on Ali, if not free. I use them exclusively for a niche shop I’m working on & never had anything but great experiences with choosing epacket as the shipping option. Alot of times, the suppliers on Aliexpress actually have epacket as their default shipping method!

  • Uga3

Wow cfingram, that’s exactly what happened to me, I used pay for conversion but didn’t get one sale. Did you have any luck afterwards?

  • Grace Esteban

Thank Irwin for posting your experience. You’re right about setting up processes in place before the flood. I owe you a lot already just by telling me this import piece. Happy travels, your wife and family are lucky to have you.
Please write more when you have the time. I’ll look for your articles. Kudos!

  • Grace Esteban

OMG! Wow! Thank you! Thank you!

  • Grace Esteban

You owe nobody an explanation man. Thank you for your article. Thank you.

  • Grace Esteban

Tom, you’re a GENIUS! Thank you too.

  • Talberly D. House Jr.

Hello, Irwin congratulations on the incredible achievement! You are truly an inspiration for newbie entrepreneurs! I have some questions that I am hoping that you would be able to clarify for me please.

    1. Are you suggesting that the best course of action is to first find the audience, by using Facebook Audience Insights , and then conduct product research on what products that you think that the audience will buy?

    2. Is it incorrect for me to think of audiences as niches and sell them whatever products that I think that they will buy from me? For example, Hockey Players audience and I will sell them kitchen utensils or clothing by using single product photo ads instead of single product photo ads displaying sports equipment?

    3. So to know if the audience is buying products, I test display different ad sets towards them featuring current best selling items from other websites (ex.watchcount). Starting out, what time frame do you suggest I run a $5 ad in order to see if the audience is buying what I display towards them?

    4. You’ve mentioned to focus on one course before you move on to others. So the http://www.physicalproductcourse.com and http://www.jonloomer.com courses were the most valuable of the other courses that you took? There weren’t any others that helped you understand drop shipping from Aliexpress? I understand to take it one step at a time, I just don’t want to get ripped off from bad courses and rather just go straight to best ones.

Thank You So Much For Your Help!

P.S.- I just followed you on Twitter.

  • corey

I thought Oberlo fulfills the orders for you.

  • corey

This guy is actually right if you are making $25 per sale in profit and a sale cost’s $20, which even this can be hard to achieve if the marketing is done incorrectly, You then profit $5 per sale. If your average sale is $50 at a 100% mark up, then your profit of margin is 10%. Last you must subtract the 3% credit card processing fee then you are left with a 7% profit of margin. So on a million dollars in sales your profit will be around $70k. Although there are ways to increase your profit margin such as by increasing your average sale price, lowering your cost per sale, and even buying in bulk to lower the cost of the product. Buying in bulk also gives you the ability to ship from the US and drastically reduce the shipping time. If All 3 of these are put into play, you can double or even triple your profit margin. Remember though, even making just $5 per sale is hard especially if you are dropshipping.

  • corey

They are both very difficult and take a lot of eduction, knowledge and hard work to become successful. If you put the work in you can make money.

  • Don Kennard

Hi Irwin , just getting started and I saw your testimony. I was very inspired and motivated by it. Keep up the great work my man!

  • Ksa

I’m very late on this thread but have a burning question. How do you handle client services, returns, complaints, etc? I guess that must be the biggest problem shipping from China. Please let me know. Thanks.

  • anil

    Hi irwin,
Congratulations on your awesome success. How did you manage customer returns using the drop ship model?

  • What is his store URL?

  • Dennis Tchen

Thanks Irwin Dominguez for posting the video!!!! Been buying so many “shiny” objects like software and programs for internet marketing but never took any action. Been a “student” and it time to take massive, massive action. Will have to stumble and get hurt like everyone else before success comes around.

  • What is his store?

  • Michael Dantzie

    amazing story!! 🙂

  • Vikram Malik

He’s skirted around that question in everyone of his responses, wherever that has been asked, making the whole thing that much harder to believe.

  • Ron Brantley

You handled that reply very professionally, Im proud of ya. Im still working on that, haha. Congrats on your success. Your testimonial is very inspiring to say the least and I wish you Great Blessings in all your eCommerce endevours.

  • Ron Brantley

Would you give out your store URL if you were very successful ??? NO, you wouldn’t if you have any sense at all. One rule of thumb as a marketer is to NEVER give away the niches you’re succeeding in. Unless you’re stupid and want hundreds of people stealing from you !!!

  • Dennis

    Mr. Dominguez

I have been drop shipping seriously for about a month now and have a had a small amount of success. I can see that it is possible to make money drop shipping. I do not know about making a million in 8 months but it does seem possible if you were working 8 hours a day or more, 7 days a week. If you have been able to do this I have the up most respect for your diligence and commitment. I have a couple questions for you if you wouldn’t mind responding. The first is would you say the goal of drop shipping is to make money and then teach others how to do it? It seems that all of the success stories I hear are some way tied to a drop shipping tutor site like Oberlo and Salehoo. Making extra income is all well and good but the time commitment teaching drop shipping would take and the possible return for that teaching would not be worth it if a person was making one million in 8 months. Also the people who are blogging or sharing a success story about drop shipping like yourself do not advertise their stores. Advertising is such a large part of many tutors tips for success and yet they do not use the stories as an opportunity to do this. The second question is how do you handle taxes on your drop shipping business? Could you provide me with a good link on how taxes and drop shipping works. The articles I have read about drop shipping and taxes seem to be very confusing. I use a drop shipper that charges tax on every item and I did not require me to give my FEIN (does this mean I do not need to pay anymore taxes?) One last question (sorry for the long post) how do you deal with spillage in terms of returns and defective items? Thank you for your time.

  • Carter Wayde

    truly inspiring

  • ntscollection

Hey Irwin, thanks for sharing your experience. I have launched my shop about 4 days ago and have seen incoming sales approxiately ($500usd), but I am currently stuck in hurdle and wanted to know if you have experienced this with Aliexpress. I made about 25 transactions, payment went fine – but then due to security reasons, Aliexpress advised I would have appeal my transactions. 3 days later, it got accepted, gleefully I went in to try and finish my orders and AGAIN it is asking me to appeal. This is becoming such a burden and is making me lose hope in using Aliexpress. I wanted to know if you have experienced anything similar….thanks so much in advance for your time.

  • mohamed ghamry

Hey Irwin, thanks for sharing your experience with us , i have issues with shipping from china the customer don’t want to wait that long is there is any way to solve this issue ???

  • M.U.

Hi Erwin, Thank you for sharing with us. I’m assuming a VA is needed to do customer service / handle returns / refunds etc.. At what point in revenue did you decide to hire one? Like when is it needed every 50K a month in sales = percentage of unhappy people that need attending?

  • Emilie Round

It costs no money to run a store and you didn’t spend any time researching…. any person I know who is making a good income from dropshipping (and I know quite a few who around around the million mark) would disagree with this. Getting started from website design to hosting or shopify to ad budget and other helpful software could cost a couple hundred if not more, still a low investment but an investment none the less, oh plus a membership to a dropshipping site which isn’t usually recommended as prices aren’t that competitive on products. Aside from this the number one thing is the research part, just because you can sell something doesn’t mean people want to buy it, you for sure want to do some research into product potential before building a site around it and advertising… common sense.

  • skarfaced

how do you even compete against aliexpress, the place you purchase goods from? customers can just go directly there to order, bypassing the middle man. they know about aliexpress, wish, rosegal….all those cheap websites already.

  • Sameer Dhakal

Good to hear about you and wish you good luck for future. Can you please tell more about shipping procedure. It takes lots of days for product to be delivered. Will the customer stay waiting so long? I even tried buying for myself just to check the number of waiting days. Product has still not arrived here in Australia and it has been more than 20 days.
how are you managing your customers in regards to delivery procedures?

  • Dee Taylor

How do you handle client services, returns, complaints, etc? I guess that must be the biggest problem shipping from China. Please let me know. Thanks

  • Michael Risteski

Hi guys, as an online retailer myself, i can tell you that i would suggest you check out a site called Flippa for great online e-commerce stores that have already been established to save you time and money.

  • kernelkorn72

It is impossible to make a million dollars starting with ZERO. It takes money to make money.

  • karan

hey irwin i just wan’t to ask one question.
does aliexpress or dropshipping works with any country?
like i am in india and i want to start dropshipping cases and covers so is it possible?

  • Taylor London

If it was so successful show proof with your store. Not buying it for a second.

  • Reddy

Lol, these “advertorials” are always so transparent. Look for the well written and detailed questions below which are posted in order to be answered. e.g. “Great write up, I would love to start my ecommerce business but I’m not technologically minded, is this for me?” “You don’t have to be tech minded, alot of people…blah, blah, blah”.

It’s all nonsense guys, designed to sucker you into using Oberlo. Also the quote from above “it costs no money to get started” – actually it DOES cost. It costs A LOT to start being a drop shipper, because you have huge capital costs in the form of the stock you sell.

  • Oh that’s why I fail, exactly why he says it! Thank you very much! His pace alone is motivation! Thank you! Cheers!

  • Ah same here! My fault too! Must DO!!! GOOD LUCK!

  • Don’t charge for shipping, but include in final price, give an estimate on shipping. Chose products with eTicket shipping and check reviews from customers what they say about shipping speed from give store, before you chose the product. As for the impatient guy, too bad so sad. Don’t be apologetic, well, yes once, out of courtesy, but he knew what he was getting, and if he really wants it, he will wait. Don’t let that panic you, be as cold as ice, be a machine, don’t take it personal, millions wait for weeks, all you can do is steps above. Good luck!

  • This helps me see hope, as I also don’t have any online presence, personaly, I despise it, but want to reach out to many as a business. I absolutely understand what you’re saying. Thanks again!

  • Omg! That is so TRUE! thank you!

  • That’s s probably why won’t share it lol!

  • Omg, that’s the whole point of dropshipping! So you don’t buy stock! Customer makes order with you, you take that money, and buy fro. Your supplier! You make no sense, but Go and trash. My fiancé works at Shopify and sees TENS OF THOUSANDS making millions! I’ve seen the numbers, it’s insane! For most stupid ideas and products, like ass cream lol, MILLIONS MAN! it’s real. And Oberlo is absolutely free. Maybe you’re just looking for an excuse to not do it, but more likely you’ve tried before and not succeeded like myself, so it’s hard to believe, but it’s all about DOING IT, putting int the hours, having a schedule and sticking to it, instead like me polishing the logo for 6 months and wondering why I got no visits.

  • Lol there is nothing to frikin buy, and guy will never reveal his business to hungry wana-bees to cut and paste his products and business. It is very real. I’ve seen it all with my eyes, tens of thousands of pple, my finance sees it at work, and my best friend also confirms it, they both work for Shopify, and they all use Oberlo. It’s all free man.

  • Of curse.

  • Thank you

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hey everyone,

Sorry for not replying to any questions/ comments lately, I’ve been just swamped and I’m not the best at replying to comments, especially when they’ve been coming from different areas (FB, Linkedin, etc). I decided to record a short video to answer a few questions /comments and to give some quick tips to all of you. FYI, Oberlo didn’t ask me to do this, I’m just trying to pay it forward as much as I can: https://youtu.be/bqD01LY0LOA

Also, in case you guys do want to change your lives, here’s the Les Brown video I listen to every single morning that helped change my life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N242Gpg7pWU.

“Go out there as if your life depended on it. Why? Because it does” Les Brown.

Take care everyone. Please just take massive action, work on your mindset, and the results will follow.

  • Ultamodan

    Awesome vid, thanks

  • Amine Esadaf

Oberlo gives a good service, but what it gets back?

  • wonderjam

One of the is Ladyluxjewelry.com – It;s not hard to find out. Most people want everything on the plate.

  • Arturs Vaitkus

    Hello, chat lives?

Soon i will start women fashion online store with targeted US audience. i am located in EU. i only have Paypal express checkout. its enough paypal for US audience? Irwin How you started to sell, you registred legal business name? or you started like individual?

And about FB ads, a lot of people say that have visitors but dont have sales. Wtf, i am first time in FC ads , and all it’s elementary to set up , how it’s possible get 0 orders ??? if to website comes 100-500 people in day. , 20% from them will order. Now i am a little scared about FC ads, cuz peaple even with real visitors dont have orders ;/

    Thank you if you readed!

  • Jeff LeBlanc

Did you ever get this resolved? I’m just starting reading about this and thinking of product niches to explore. Don’t want to run into the same issues!

  • Robin Powell

is this a fake article? looks like your article says one thing about this guy and he says another, i.e he was an accountant…

check this out, same guy saying he did and now does something completly different to this article. tut tut

  • Arturs Vaitkus

haha really , wtf , you want to say that all fake ? interesting , interesting ….

  • Robin Powell

guess you’re new to this! gullible!

  • Arturs Vaitkus

Drop shipping is proven, you can earn on it. The oberlo facilitates the entire process. I’m here to make money, what’s the meaning behind something to hide from me. And this article big motivator to start Online store with drop shipping…..

  • John Carter

If I were him, I would not share my URL, just the points to success, which he has done.
Why? Because people (not you probably but some) are too lazy to think for themselves and will copy his site and undercut his prices etc… no, I think Irwin has struck a good balance of helping us all and protecting his own asset.
I hope you can understand and appreciate what he is offering for free.

  • John Carter

Yes, that is my question and I have been searching but I cannot find…
I expect there is a micro commission from Alie-express and also from Shopify (you can see shopify pushing Oberlo, as it is in their interest too).

  • John Carter

    Good questions,
Suggest you put it more in a point format next time (FYI you can press ENTER or CTRL ENTER without posting).
But I look forward to the answers 🙂

  • Dennis

As a college educated person I understand your comment. Not helpful. After months Mr. Dominguez does not reply. I’m calling BS on this post. No one should believe this article.

  • Dennis

Or should I say Oberlo. Your logic is flawed. Any successful person would promote their business not hide behind it. This isn’t a niche business it is a widely publicized form of online sales. This article misleads individual into thinking they need to pay Oberlo to have a successful Dropshipping business. From selling clothes to electronics you can only benefit in this business by MARKETING your site. Not pretending like it’s a secret.

  • Rachael Phillips

I have taken time to read the various comments and of course the post. I just wanted to make a quick comment in relation to some of the comments. I’m a mother of 4 and wife and I started selling online about 13 years ago selling on different eCommerce platforms. I started making money by day two of selling online small amounts but for me I was so ecstatic that the stories I had been reading on the internet was true. I believe it’s all about consistency and belief these are the two things I’ve learnt with the eCommerce and entrepreneurship journey.

When I first started out I would make money and then I would stop and do nothing and instead I enjoyed spending the money I’d made or spend the extra free time I had with family, rather than repeating what I did to earn me the money in the first place.

I just couldn’t come to terms that is was that easy to make money online I was expecting it to me so much harder. Some days I would go to bed and in the morning there would be $4000 in my paypal account and some days it would be $70.

You can’t believe it until you try it out for yourself, you’ve got to believe you can do it and you’ve got to be consistency don’t stop or slow down just because to hit some small success keep going until it becomes a habit or second nature to you(that is earning lots of money online that is).

And another thing because the internet and most eCommerce platforms work better for newbies or long timers if you leave in counties that is easier to ship to like UK or US you would be better off to look for eCommerce platforms and apps in your own countries first if you live out of the UK or US. Trust me a lot of innovative entrepreneur and companies are joining the new gold rush of the internet and eCommerce age and if you take your time to search you would probably find something local to you and that would save you the stress and hassle on shipping problems.

Then once you start making money and you have some experience under your belt then you can start playing with the big boys as you’ve built some balls such to speak.

I wish you all every success in you making your financial dreams and freedom come true 🙂

Heart filled with joy shearing this to this forum. I was so wrecked that my company fired me simply because i did not obliged to their terms, so they hacked into my system and phone and makes it so difficult to get any other job, i did all i could but things kept getting worse by the day that i couldn’t afford my 3 kids fees and pay my bills. I owe so many people trying to borrow money to survive because my old company couldn’t allow me get another job and they did all they could to destroy my life just for declining to be among their evil deeds. haven’t given up i kept searching for job online when i came across the testimony of a lady called Judith regarding how she got the blank ATM card. Due to my present state, i had to get in touch with Hacker called Bernard Lucas. email: bernardlucasworld88@hotmail.com and he told me the procedures and along with the terms which i agreed to abide and i was told that the Blank card will be deliver to me without any further delay and i hold on to his words and to my greatest surprise, i received an ATM card worth $5000 Daily withdraw for 12 months.i immediately confirmed it, it is 100% real and work. All Thanks to Bernard Lucas, if you are facing any financial problem contact him asap. Email: bernardlucasworld88@hotmail.com

Apparently you have to wait 24 hours after the acceptance email to appeal your transactions again as it takes that long to update their system. Not sure why they don’t just send the email after it’s been updated.

hey guys, is it possible to do use Oberlo for an ebay shop?

  • SergeantScrotes

    you don’t.

  • Cool Hand Luke

The title of this article is “8 Months and $1M Later: How One First-Time eCommerce Entrepreneur Made his Fortune”
And so I was expecting to read some detailed how-to, but instead, all I got was “Facebook Ads”. The how, what, when, and where of Facebook Ads is something for me to break my head over. The bottom line is I’ve been reading articles for ten years, and not a single instance of concrete knowledge. Gary Vee is absolutely right, if you search through the entire knowledge base of successful e-commerce you will find absolutely nothing. The only person who will ever teach you how to succeed is your father; provided the he succeeded himself.

  • Hi there. Oberlo is fully integrated with Shopify platform only. You can add eBay as a sales channel on Shopify, but we cannot guarantee it will work flawlessly.

  • Roee Arbel

    Hi Irwin,
Thanks for the video and your story. I find it very inspiring.
I am just starting out with ecommerce and I am really having a difficult time figuring out an answer to one simple (?) question, and hopefully you can help me –
What is the best way to start? Should I open a general store with various product categories (all niche products which I will selectively advertise on FB) or should I open a store centered around one niche idea, and have only products for that niche?

  • George Nagy

I personally am disappointed with the Oberlo system, but can see it work. They should screen who sells through them to make sure that photo’s supplied are not watermarked as i had chosen many products to sell [had to then import many products from my WordPress website] to find pictures watermarked, have contacted the supplier for new photo’s, they won’t send them and have asked Oberlo for help, only to be told find a supplier that has no watermarks, blah, blah blah…I don’t have the skills most people do as i’m self taught to use a computer and some of the things in Oberlo tutorial are just too hard for me to comprehend. I have had product on my site not for over a month and no sales, so what now? How is this going to work for me? Anyone? I so desperately want to provide for my family and have my wife come and work with me and give up her job, i really need a miracle, because i don’t know what i’m doing and i am still not making money?

  • Hey George,

I doubt the miracle will happen. Your success as an entrepreneur lies within your abilities – you need to devote time and effort to succeed in dropshipping (like in any other business).

How do you drive traffic to your store? What other marketing tactics do you employ? Let me know and I’ll share some relevant resources for you to learn.

Also, connect with fellow entrepreneurs and learn from them at http://ask.oberlo.com/!

  • Arturs Vaitkus

Oberlo deleted my comments…. now i cant trust to oberlo, thanks

  • Hey Arturs!

Not sure why this happened, sorry! Would you mind sharing your comments once again?

  • Joshua Hoe

Centered around one niche idea first so that u don’t blow your customers mind with so many options to choose since they might just get impatient.

From there you start getting traffic and word spreads, then you can try another niche.

  • Joshua Hoe

Which is why drop shipping is super competitive but with very low start up costs and risks.

  • Joshua Hoe

No shit bro. This is the 21st Century. And since you are in India, its most probably gonna be free shipping

  • Juan Carlos Riva Herrera

I woud syggested you to focus on just one niche. It’s better to sell to one group rather than make everyone happy.

  • Is there a link to his store somewhere in the post? I can’t find it.

  • Hey there,

No, we do not share the links to’ stores, to prevent merchants’ business from being copied.

  • Star Stretcher

I couldn’t find a link to his store either, it seems more people getting rich from selling the idea if being a drop shipper then are actually drop shipping. What is Irwins store?

  • Hi there,

Start by launching an online store. This article explains it in detail: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/how-i-launched-my-ecommerce-store-in-less-than-30-minutes/

If you get stuck at any step, give us a shout hello@oberlo.com and we’ll help you out! 🙂

  • Hi,

Here’s a good read on how to start affiliate marketing: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/get-started-ecommerce-affiliate-marketing

As for the feedback on your store, I suggest you seek advice from fellow dropshippers at http://ask.oberlo.com/t/your-store-feedback

    Good luck!

  • Hello there,

I’m afraid there’s no exact number – it depends on a number of individual factors.
I wouldn’t recommend selling more than 200, though.

  • Yurii @

How did you make it? I ran Facebook Conversion Ads 5$/day for 2 days for test but It only brings visitors with no purchase.

  • Hey there,

It’s normal as you only ran ads for 2 days. Besides, the budget is really low, therefore algorithm doesn’t have any room to learn.

It’s really good that you’re getting visitors though. You should set up retargeting campaign for them.

Also, what kind of campaign are you running? If it’s Conversions campaign, what Conversion event you’re using to optimize on?

  • Somchai Brown

Hi Irwin, thank you for a great tutors and information you shared on your success story. I started the dropshipping through Shopify about 3 months ago with Oberlo app. FB ad is the starting point for me. But for the past 3 months, my sale total is not as high as I expected in a low hundreds I would say. You had mentioned that there are several online training like http://physicalproductsyste… and http://jonloomer.com. My questions are as below:
–Does the training well worth the money spend? It’s $100 for Matt’s course, a big cash for me but if it’s worth it, I will sign up and learn from him.
–What was your first marketing strategy? I used FB ad only as starting point but the conversion rate is extremely poor and disappointing, should I switch to PInterest or Google Adwords? I do like FB ad because of it’s friendly interface. I see that many dropshipping made a big conversion on it.
–Do you offer worldwide shipping to the customer when you start off or just only US?
Thanks again Irwin, good story and I hope my store will achieve that soon.

  • Lehm Terona Luma

He’s like the entrepreneur version of mr. bean. This time he’s not funny but I still like him.

  • Somchai Brown

    Hi Tomas,
I had just posted some questions to Irwin but if you can also advise as well, that would be great.
I had run the FB ad with $5 per day for 3 days, the audience is 10 mil as cover several countries, there are many views and post but no purchase at all. I increase the ad to $30 a day but still no purchase, end up spending several hundreds with no conversion. Can you please advise on this? Thank you.

  • Hey Somchai,

Seems like your audience is way too large. Also, it’s not a good idea to combine several countries, unless those markets are very similar: for example, Scandinavian countries. You can combine Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark into one audience, but combining US and UK into one would be a mistake. Thus, you should reduce your audience size by splitting it.

Did you have a chance to check out this Facebook ads tutorial: https://www.oberlo.com/guides/facebook-tutorial-launching-first-campaign? Have a look – it will help you launch a successful campaign.

Let me know if you need a hand!

  • Somchai Brown

    Hi Tomas,
Thank you for your reply. I will take a look at the Facbook ad guideline from Oberlo. I tried my ad strategy that way again. I have further question though if you start off with the FB ad, how many products would you suggest I run per day to get the good audience to my site. I had tried one to three products and they all didn’t produce any single conversion but many click through my website for the view. It is really surprise me of may be something else is at play.
    Is my site not trustworthy?
Is my product price to high compare with other?
Is my product not in a hot trend any longer?
Did I focus on the right audience? This one you had mentioned that I should scale down which I will.
Thank you again for your reply Tomas.

  • Alvin Arietta

Do you need to be a tech savvy to start this business?

  • Laura Burgess

Hi is there any one UK based using this. Just about to launch an ecommerce website which will hold anything and everything Cat based. Looking for products to dropship any help or advice would be great

  • Hey Alvin. No, not at all. If you launch your store on Shopify platform, no specific technical knowledge is needed whatsoever.

The key to success is right product selection and a good marketing strategy. Go ahead, give it a try!

  • Hey there Laura! I’d recommend you to visit Oberlo ask forum to connect with fellow entrepreneurs: https://ask.oberlo.com/ I’m sure there are loads of people based in the UK 🙂

I’d recommend you to import and sell items from Oberlo Supply marketplace. Check out the product assortment here: https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers

Alternatively, you can import and sell any item that you find on AliExpress.com. There’s plenty of cat related products in there too!

    All the best!

  • Hey there,

it doesn’t matter how many products you will run at once. You can start with one and realise that it’s a bestseller. it’s all about finding the right audience for the right product. In my opinion, it’s better to concentrate on one product, test it out on several different audiences, and if it’s not converting – switch to another one.

As for the rest of your questions – I’m afraid, I can’t give you an answer, as I’m not familiar with your business. If you’d like to discuss these questions, give us a shout at hello@oberlo.com and include your store’s URL. Our Customer Success managers will do their best to help you out.

    All the best!

  • Craig Dickson

Hello, just a couple of questions, you mention you use different suppliers other than Aliexpress and Oberlo, with Shopify only supporting Oberlo + Ali Express does this mean you have more than one site and more than 1 store online? is this not inparctical its like trying to run 2-3 business’ all doing the same thing though just under different names?

hope this makes sense and i welcome any other advice from people reading this.

  • Reggie

I just read the help page below:
Please correct me if I’m wrong but, in what I just read, is it basically saying that I don’t have to purchase the products I’m promoting on my page before I promote them? ie, I don’t need to buy my inventory first before I sell it? Thanks in advance for your time Irwin.

  • Hi there Craig,

You can import products to your Shopify store from as many suppliers as you’d like. You do not need to have separate stores for each of your suppliers.

Not sure if that answers your question, though. If it doesn’t, get back to me with some more details and I’ll be happy to advise:)

  • Hey there,

I’ll jump in here if you don’t mind. That’s right – as a dropshipper, you don’t have to stock products yourself. You are just a liaison between your customers and the suppliers. To find out more, have a look at our beginner’s guide here: http://help.oberlo.com/welcome-to-oberlo/how-dropshipping-with-oberlo-works

You should also check out our ultimate guide to dropshipping too: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/aliexpress-dropshipping-guide-/#How-to-pick-the-right-product-to-sell

Give me a shout if you have questions!

  • Craig Dickson

Hello Tomas, So i have read somewhere that Olberlo only works with Aliexpress, is this meaning only in terms of functionality such as shipping and processing orders or could i literally import an item from anywhere online and it work?

    Thanks 🙂

  • Irwin Dominguez

    Hey guys,

    Just throwing this out there…

I have an IMMEDIATE NEED for help with our online advertising. We will provide the training. You MUST be able to work from our office in North County San Diego. If anyone is interested please ‘reply’ to this post. Thank you!

  • Gavist Liber

Yeah, no one actually mentions the money they invest up front in Google and/or FB ads, without the re-investments! God knows I put in all the absolute effort and made a single sale in 2 months. I just didn’t have the money to invest in FB ads.

  • Jeremy Bursky

Hi Irwin, I am in San Diego, and I am in IMMEDIATE NEED. Please private message me back. I already attempted to send you an email several hours ago. Thank you!

  • Jeremy Bursky

Hi Irwin, I’m in East County San Diego. I am trying to connect with you. I am interested. Thank you!

  • Irwin Dominguez

I started running with $5/ day adsets, I didn’t put in much money when I started and I had no experience with FB ads – NONE. I didn’t have cash but I had a credit card and belief I would make it work. Keep it up, you’ll eventually get it! Something is off with your advertising; the offer, the targeting but something is off, this is the part you need to figure out and be stubborn about not giving up until you get it to work, but also being disciplined enough not to spend all your money on campaigns that don’t work. Anyways, good luck to you and I hope it works out.

  • Enough for Inspiration!

  • Elijah John Yarra

    are you a Filipino @irwindominguez:disqus ?

  • Hey!

Using Oberlo, you can import and sell items from Oberlo Supply marketplace ( https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers ) or AliExpress.com. You won’t be able to import products from any other marketplace using Oberlo, I’m afraid.

Give Oberlo Supply a go! Here’s more info about it: https://help.oberlo.com/other-faqs/what-are-the-differences-between-oberlo-supply-and-aliexpress

  • Jordan Cox

Hi Irwin, that’s completely contradictory to what you said in the above article – “I have dabbled with Facebook advertising over the years” – Plus the internet is the world’s greatest “browser history” so everyone can see your “do anything just to get rich without scruples” philosophy! 😉

  • Irwin Dominguez

Jordan, when I say “dabble”, I mean I spent $40 trying to promote my consulting business, so technically I had “experience” but let me tell you, I didn’t know what the heck I was doing and I got “scared” when I saw $40 spent and no initial return. I had no idea how it worked, objectives, etc – I was completely clueless… I was never committed so that’s why FB didn’t work for me back during the “dabbling” times.

  • Mara

What they don’t tell you is how much work and money goes to advertising. You can’t just expect people to “stumble” into your store.

That said, how exactly are you promoting your business? Do you do facebook ads? Video marketing? What?

  • Vivian Bernardo

    This is GOLDEN! Thank you!!

  • Alvin Joo

Hey Irwin just read your story and really inspired! I’m actually located in Irvine, CA, but I’am willing to relocate. I am really excited to jump into the eCommerce Shopify/Amazon business. Ill send you a direct message with my resume!

  • Priscilla Gonzales

So…. I really want to start drop shipping, but the reason i haven’t started is because I’ve researched that a droppshipper should pay with a credit card for the products because the banks and/or aliexpress will stop payment with anything else, and if it does occur there is alot of paperwork to do when/if it does happen. how do i pay for products without using a credit card? what’s the best way to pay for the products?

  • Nita Jan

Oberlo are application? Are you all guys using this Oberlo

  • Justin Moritz

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Antonio Mercado Jr.

HI Irwin, I’m Tony from the Philippines. Can you share some hints on the best niche or products that you sell? What are the common payment options for customers if I’m from the Philippines? I’m not sure if Paypal is operating here so do I have to open a credit card? Thank you in advance for your advice.

  • Hello there,

Here’s a list of payment methods that you can use on AliExpress: http://activities.aliexpress.com/adcms/help-aliexpress-com/payment_methods.php.

Note, that AliExpress may block orders only if your credit card fails. A credit card can fail when you process too many orders at once for the first time or have insufficient funds which cause your bank to freeze the card. Make sure that you have enough funds on your credit card to allow the payment through and you won’t need to worry.

    Good luck!

  • Trend Mate

Hi sir can I have your email address?

I hear over and over that drop shipping is difficult and blah blah. If its so hard and such why is there so much competition. In my mind the main reason to not do it is you are one of a million people doing it. Is it really worth it when everyone with a computer seems to be trying it?

  • Arsa Gul

HeyI want to know to more about starting business on oberlo plz plzz help me

  • Peter Egwuagu

I’ve got my shop set-up so what next?.. do i start placing Facebook ads?

  • Marcos Ramirez

Why did my comment get removed? I wanted to know why with all the competition should someone consider getting into this. It seems there thousand of people doing it. Yes its a global market with billions of people, but only so many can be seen online. If 1000 people advertise the same shirts even if one billion search for the shirt they will only see some of the 1000 marketers. So what’s the attraction to get involved this late in the game?

  • Shopaz Shopify

    Hi James,
I have recently joined Oberlo dropshipping and have set up my store. But I’m not sure how it’s looks like for customers both visiting my Facebook page and Shopify store. I need someone who has experience on this matter to help me with my store. I have been running Facebook add, but not sure if this brings me any value. The store has been set up about 5 days, however apart from couple of likes I don’t see much of positive movement.

  • Hi, there!

Some dropshippers get a first sale on the same day they launch the e-store, while others need to work hard for months.

If you get traffic to your e-store this indicates that your ad is good and there are people, who are interested in your product. However, the problem appears because of your Shopify store, products or other attributes. One of the most popular reasons why visitors do not make a purchase is they don’t trust a store they never bought from before. You should try your best to build a professional e-store, that visitors wouldn’t think you are a scam. https://help.oberlo.com/improve-your-business/how-to-make-the-online-store-look-credible

Other concerns may be: the lack of information about the product, not suitable delivery time, product is too expensive or the visitors didn’t find a payment option suitable for them.

Hey Tomas, thanks for all the great info on this blog! I think I’m ready to get started with my ecommerce site but am a little hesitant with the extended amount of time it takes products to reach my customers. hi Tomas.Inspiring .truly amazing.I will start dropshipping now

  • Epifanio

These guys have no million dollar e-commerce businesses. They’re just trying to sell you a marketing e-book, a video course, a coaching program, etc. That’s how they make money. The “How i made X million dollar in X months” is their marketing click-bait to get you buy what they are selling either directly or indirectly through affiliate marketing.
That is why they never advertise their stores, because there are simply no stores.

If he would reply with the name of his store (i doubt he’ll ever do that), we could easily check out whether the store is really making the money he claims it’s making. There are many tools to “reverse engineer” the potential revenue of any e-commerce site.

Let’s wait for the reply 🙂

  • Epifanio

This is the typical reply that these how-i-became-a-millionaire guys give to that legit question. And it is the most senseless reply ever. Revealing the name of an e-commerce business does not have any harmful effect for the following reasons that every decently experienced marketer should know:

    1) There is no niche on this planet where you are the only seller. You will always have competitors, unless you’re a monopolist or have unique IP (patents, etc.).
    2) If anyone would ever think of getting into the same niche, he has a big competitive advantage of being ahead in the business having already an established brand, trusted and tested suppliers, business processes and a loyal audience
    3) The number of people who “take actions” by starting a business is very small even when you tell them that some products sell well
    4) There are several success stories of people who have made big money and have revealed their businesses without a problem

  • Epifanio

Are you still spending $5/day ? Because now that you are more experienced with Facebook ads you should know what $5/adset can bring you …

  • Epifanio

Unfortunately you DO need to invest at the very least a couple hundred dollars per month to see some meaningful results from FB/Google ads, depending on your profit margin and cost per acquisition. Successful e-commerce stores do invest in the thousands per month. I am surprised this guy doesn’t mention this very important aspect of running an e-commerce business.

  • Epifanio

This is the typical excuse to avoid further investigation on these “how i got rich” stories.

  • Epifanio

So you have got a fiance that’s working at Shopify, where she sees “TENS OF THOUSANDS making millions” with the most stupid ideas and … you are not trying to copy those ideas and keep polishing your logo ?

  • king power

I would also like to launch a drop shipping store using Oberlo and that being said, I think it would be helpful, as tips & tricks, to know how much did Irwin invested in marketing tools in order to obtain $1 M in sales, in just 8-9 months from launching his store?

  • Walt Kienia

And of course, like many of these stories, we’re never told the actual name of the “successful” store.

  • Hey! Glad you found it useful 🙂 Best of luck!

  • Hey, Marcos,

You wouldn’t see that many people doing it if it wasn’t worth it 🙂 Pick the right product, master your marketing and you’ll beat the competition. Good luck!

Irwin Dominguez – what is the name of your website making this money and what are the websites that your friends are making this and more. Its hard to believe this is true without any proof. People – dont believe everything you read, ask for proof.
Its simple – just give us your website and friends websites that make over 1 million per year. You should be proud of these sites and eager to share them!

  • Richard Dynas

What is the name of your site?

  • Martin

  • Shaik Naushad

What is the name of his e-commerce business ? I gone through the entire article but found nothing. Am I missing something ?

  • Edito Eduardo Jr

hi, how to start up on that?

  • Matly Noval

hello i would like to start dropshipping. im from philippines

  • Ben Gfrorer

Droppshipping should make sense if you can get a wholesale item that shipping, marketing and sites don’t eat up your profits. Early in flat screen TV’s when they were $5k (2003) you could make money, but now they are $400 for a 55″ 4K LED smart TV (nobody spends $2k for the top of the line when it’s so close to walmart grade.) Ebay type sites take 10-20% and shipping anything heavy is expensive. Marketing charges too much. You ask any expert and they tell you to build a following for years, I have 100+ emails from people that bought my $100 book; if I offer something new I get 3% to buy (woo hoo, lol.) Porn used to be a cash cow, not since 2008; thanks Obama!

  • Ben Gfrorer

Sad but true. Lasting success in dropshipping is rare these days, if you find a saleable product you need bulk and free marketing to make a profit.

  • leonard james

  • Aaron Lewis

I disagree. You would be right in saying that the header for the article is click bait, however, to assume there is no truth to the success stories is a bit of a rash assumption. It is my belief that success is the result of investing a large amount of time studying, trying and failing, utilizing a carefully thought out and proven strategy, and the tenacity to continue pushing through the initial phase of growth, which is where most people fail. Patience is a virtue, in fact, it is the virtue that along with tenacity, will ensure a good level of success. Having limited beliefs will only continue to hold you back, so i would advise that if your answer to all of these articles or success stories are, ‘that’s BS’ just give up now unless you’re prepared to adjust your perspective what is possible, because the truth is, ‘if you can believe it, you can achieve it, but if you’re filled with doubt, you will go without.’

  • Epifanio

Sorry but while what you said about patience and tenacity in business is true, it is not relevant to the point discussed here. If you have been in business for even a decent amount of time you should know that what these guys are doing is simply content marketing. To their advantage. Not yours. They’re not just sharing a story for the sake of it in a neutral context. Probably there is some amount of truth in this specific story. Or maybe not. You will never know. And that’s the point.

There are many real success stories out there of people telling about their successful businesses where you can easily verify what business they’re in. They boldly slam it in your face because they’re proud of it. Rightly so. I’ve read several and some inspired me in my business ventures.

A common trait of all these “How i became a millionaire” stories is that the nature of these successful businesses is never revealed. That alone would ring many bells to anyone who, aside from patience and tenacity, also possess another big virtue: the ability to stay rational and tell reality from fantasy. This ability in business will save you from failures and scams. And if you think that this is a “limited belief” you’re lacking a business trait that will greatly contribute to your success.

The dropshipping business today is not what these guys want you to believe it is. Hard work and patience is not enough. One of the major requirements to build a successful business (not only dropshipping) is big budgets for marketing. Unless you’re a marketing guru and know how to drive the huge traffic you need to make millions for free. And that puts all the average Joes out of the story. But they need as many people as possible to click, sign up, buy or whatever. So this is never mentioned.

But of course you can always read stories about people winning the lottery and be patient and tenacious buying tickets until it’s your turn. Good luck with that.

  • Cynthia b.

i would love to help as well…thank you

  • Johnny Michael

I think the majority of ‘average Joes’ fail because they don’t have the patience, skills, or work ethic to succeed in these e-commerce ventures.

They approach it like a ‘get rich quick’ scheme and quit after they blow all of their cash on a poorly targeted ad campaign, or drive traffic to a site with mediocre products, an ugly design or amateurish copy. Having the luxury of thousands to invest clearly doesn’t guarantee success online; this is evident from the number of YouTube comments whining about ‘blowing x-thousand on FB ads and not making a single sale’.

It’s like when you read the reviews of dating apps like Tinder and there are countless guys crying scam because they are too creepy to attract women. Of course many or even most people fail – for the same reason that most people fail to succeed in their careers or any other areas of life where achieving above average results demands hard work, passion, self-awareness, and persistence.

  • Johnny Michael

Literally millions of people have jobs or own businesses in every industry imaginable. Does that mean that there’s no reason to have a job or start a business?

  • Johnny Michael

These comments are full of people who are just completely negative and creating conspiracy theories without considering that there is no motive for this guy to be lying about his success.

People who have the mindset to succeed in life will just register for the free Spotify trial and find out for themselves.

Of course most people fail – because most people are too lazy and negative to even get started, and most who get that far will quit as soon as their rushed website with badly written descriptions, crappy products, and incompetent Facebook ads fails to make them a millionaire overnight.

So it stands to reason that the minority of people like Irwin who put in the hours stand out from the crowd and are profitable.

Hi , I want to start my shipping business and would like to know which payment method can be use in Nigeria In order get payment done .thanks

  • Spoon Spy

    More information please

  • Hey, Chuck!

Sorry for my late reply. Your customers won’t mind the delivery time as long as you set clear expectations for them. You should let your users know about the delivery times in your Shipping Policy page on your store.

If available, always choose ePacket shipping method – it’s relatively fast and inexpensive. And also, you can offer free shipping to your customers, which will make them less sensitive to longer delivery times.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Rodrigo,

Most of dropshippers start with Facebook ads. I recommend you do the same! Check out this tutorial to learn how to launch your first ad: https://www.oberlo.com/guides/facebook-tutorial-launching-first-campaign.

  • Hello,

Sorry for being late with the response! Yes, you can run a dropshipping store using Oberlo from Nigeria 😉

  • Hi there,

It doesn’t matter where you’re located – you can operate a dropshipping business rom any country in the world, including Bangladesh.

  • Hi there,

    Sorry for my late response!

It’s hard for me to say whether the product is good or not. If you’re having doubts about your product selection, browse through other stores for inspiration. For example Amazon bestsellers: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers/zgbs?ref=ali-importer-blog; or eBay daily deals: http://www.ebay.com/rpp/globaldeals?ref=ali-importer-blog.

I’d also recommend you to check out this Help Center article and adjust your store based on the points given there: https://help.oberlo.com/improve-your-business/how-to-make-the-online-store-look-credible.

As for the Facebook ads, we’ve launched a Facebook ads tutorial series. You can learn from these a lot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oce_bNA5obM&list=PLbam2U6VuWtkh2p7dRutEzVdznbsLYoag

If you get stuck at any step, give us a shout at hello@oberlo.com and Oberlo Customer Success team will help you out!

  • Hello Shaik,

No, the absence of the store name is intentional. We’re obliged to protect Irwin’s business competitiveness, therefore the name of the store cannot be shared.

  • Hey buddy,

    Here’s a list: https://www.shopify.com/payment-gateways/nigeria.

    Good luck!

  • Here’s the list for you, Helen: https://www.shopify.com/payment-gateways/ukraine 😉

  • Jonathan Alli

    Hello Temidayo,
You can use Paystack or CashEnvoy to receive payments in Nigeria. I currently use Paystack anyway.

  • Hi there,

The global average conversion rate is 2%, which means that you need to bring 50 people to your site to make a sale. It might cost you $10 to bring that traffic in one country, while it can also cost you $50 in a more developed market like the U.S.

So there’s no specific answer, I’m afraid. The budget heavily depends on he country that you’re targeting.

How does Drop Shipping work? do you have to pay upfront for your products before you sell them to your customers in your store on shopify?

  • Melissa K Iwanski-Monje

I would like more information on both affiliate marketing and dropshipping???

  • Hey Melissa! You should check out this article: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/dropshipping-vs-affiliate-marketing. Lots of useful info in there!

  • Titus

I’d like to know how much money he started his dropshipping business with and if he tracked his monthly spending in the beginning ads stages.

  • Dave10679

clearly you have not found a money maker venture …no one making Real money online is going to tell you what they sell…they will give you a general idea and a path to take and then its on you to get to work. I have a few products online and when i give advice..i dont give up my months worth of time on business to the so it an be copied. I personally know a Amazon seller that went from 0 doing over 50M yearly in 4 years and you will never hear him telling you what he sells…..that just dumb!

  • Dave10679

  • Hello Irwin, I read your blog and it was very inspirational at a time where I needed it the most. I’m gonna try some of the advice and tips you gave. Thanks for that by the way. I’m a dropshipper myself and I had two questions I am hoping you can answer:
    1) Do you find that video content ad work better than picture ads on FB?
    2) I can understand that disclosing revenue could be private and sales – costs = revenue, so for the purpose of keeping that info personal would you mind telling me what your Annual Revenue to Marketing Cost Ratio is? I’m pretty analytical so it would be make more sense to me a ratio for example: 1,000,000 Revenue : 100,000 Marketing Costs = 10 :1.

  • Hey 🙂

Once you reach a point where one person handling the business is not sufficient, you should hire a Virtual Assistant. Here’s more info: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/what-is-a-virtual-assistant.

  • Hey!

Have you launched your store yet?

Use this step-by-step guide to set it up: https://www.oberlo.com/start-your-ecommerce-business/.

hi i read a lot of articles about dropshipping but still confuse on how it works. so is dropshipping like a marketing dept of retailers? you basically market products from retailers and sell it?

  • Hey!

Not quite. It does require a lot of marketing effort, but it’s not limited to that. To understand how dropshipping works, have a look at this Help Center article, I’m sure it will clarify things up 🙂 https://help.oberlo.com/welcome-to-oberlo/how-dropshipping-with-oberlo-works.

    Good luck!

  • Hey there!

Unfortunately, Shopify is not available in Somalia and thus I do not have information of what payment gateways are available in your country. Apologies!

  • Hey,

Sorry for my late reply! That’s great news 🙂 Start by launching a Shopify store. This article will guide you through the process: https://www.oberlo.com/start-your-ecommerce-business/.

You’ll then need to focus on promoting your store so you can get sales. Most of dropshippers bring traffic to their stores using Facebook ads. Check out this tutorial to learn how to launch your first ad: https://www.oberlo.com/guides/facebook-tutorial-launching-first-campaign.
