What Is Dropshipping? It’s the Easiest Way to Start an Online Business!

Import hundreds of products to your store in minutes.

With dropshipping, store owners can sell products to their customers without actually stocking the items themselves. Dropshipping isn’t something new. Zappos started dropshipping back in 1999. Amazon and Sears use this business model, too. If big names don’t catch your attention, look at the regular guys making their way and sharing their stories as dropshippers on Reddit. Nowadays, up to 33% of the entire ecommerce industry uses dropshipping as a primary inventory management model.

Small scale ecommerce entrepreneurs love dropshipping because there is no inventory to hold, which translates into a lower upfront investment. Not having to manage an inventory also lets you concentrate more on the most important thing – bringing in new customers. In this article, you’ll learn what dropshipping is, and why you should care about it.

What Is Dropshipping?: How Dropshipping Works

At this point you might be asking yourself, how does dropshipping work?  Perhaps you’ve heard the term floating around on various ecommerce platforms or maybe this is one of your first times encountering the concept at all. In the simplest terms, after a dropshipper sells a product, he or she buys it from a supplier and has it shipped directly to the customer. Typically, the process works as follows. An ecommerce merchant posts products on his or her website, from which a customer places an order and pays for the item. Then, the merchant fulfills the order by placing an order for that same product from the supplier who sends it to the customer. When merchants decide to host their ecommerce shops through Shopify, apps like Oberlo make the process simpler and more streamlined by acting as the connective tissue between the supplier marketplace and the front end of the ecommerce shop from where the merchant items are displayed for sale and purchased. The app makes it easier to import products directly from suppliers into the store, and helps to manage any changes in inventory or pricing in the supply marketplace so that there aren’t any discrepancies between what is being displayed in a merchant’s ecommerce shop and the actual characteristics of the item in the marketplace.

In addition to numerous dropshipping advantages, the dropship model is extremely flexible:

  • Dropshippers control their own margins. Also, dropshippers aren’t bound to a suggested retail price (MSRP) and can decide their retail prices on their own.
  • Dropshippers don’t need to be established business entities before starting their online stores. Though they will need one once they grow.
  • Dropshippers have access to millions of products. Instantly.

How does dropshipping work?

Understanding the Supply Marketplace

At this point, the supplier marketplace portion of the dropshipping model might seem a bit mysterious, so let’s shed some light on that aspect of things before moving on. Dropshipping is largely fueled by Chinese suppliers, and the number of Chinese dropshipping companies is still on the rise. The growth of Chinese exports during the last decade can be linked to their integration with western businesses, and now thousands of Chinese suppliers understand the opportunity they have with dropshipping. That’s why to most people, dropshipping reminds them of Chinese products and nothing else.

Ecommerce entrepreneurs can access these Chinese suppliers through online supply marketplaces where they post and sell the products they produce at wholesale prices. By far the most common and widely utilized of these is AliExpress. Using this platform will make figuring out how to start a dropship businesses much easier and it can also boost your current store’s efficiency. Naturally, it isn’t perfect, but it’s very useful to understand the ins and outs of AliExpress as well as its origins.

AliExpress Explained

The name Jack Ma shouldn’t be a unfamiliar to you. He is the guy who built the $179B Alibaba empire that predates the AliExpress marketplace. Ma is often compared to Jeff Bezos from Amazon, as he started his business in 1999 after failing to find Chinese products online. He built Alibaba as a platform to offer Chinese suppliers’ products to the western world.

At Alibaba, ecommerce entrepreneurs can buy products wholesale to stock their warehouses. From there, AliExpress was created to accommodate dropshippers who instead purchase items and have them shipped directly from AliExpress to their customers instead of stocking the merchandise themselves. In other words, Alibaba is set up for buying wholesale and AliExpress was created for the dropshipping ecommerce model. With  AliExpress, you can buy products in single items for yourself as well.

Small scale ecommerce entrepreneurs and individual sellers can register on either platform, and order products from them to sell to people around the world. It’s important to note that neither Alibaba nor AliExpress holds inventory as they are simply platforms that host individual suppliers looking to sell their products to merchants. They are marketplaces set up similarly to eBay. For the purposes of understanding dropshipping in conjunction with AliExpress, the most common supply marketplace used with this ecommerce business model, let’s run through how this crucial side of the process works in a bit more detail.

How Dropshipping Works with AliExpress

AliExpress dropshipping works in line with traditional dropshipping methods. You can search products on the marketplace and choose from millions of options. When you find an item that you like and wish to sell in your own store, simply import the product from AliExpress to your store and set your own price markups. Oberlo makes importing and syncing the product, photos, and accompanying descriptive information with your own store easier as it can otherwise be difficult to ensure that the AliExpress marketplace and the front end of your store coincide with each other. This is because AliExpress is a live marketplace where product prices fluctuate and inventories vary. Don’t forget that once you sell a product in your store, you will then need to go through and purchase it from AliExpress. From there, the supplier will ship the item directly to your customer.

What Makes AliExpress Special as a Dropshipping Marketplace

As a one stop shop for all your product importing, AliExpress dropshipping comes with many advantages, including the fact that when you dropship goods from AliExpress, you gain more freedom and time to focus on what matters: marketing. This is one of the most important aspects of operating a successful dropshipping business.

The reason that AliExpress distinguishes itself from other dropshipping marketplaces is its expansive size, where an enormously wide range of products are available for dropshippers to choose from. For a bit of comparison, one of the largest wholesale directories, WholeSale2b, offers over 1,500,000 products. AliExpress sells more than 1,500,000 t-shirts alone, and you can choose to dropship any of them simply by importing them from AliExpress into your store. Not to mention the mind boggling number of other categories including everything from electronics and jewelry and much more.

Next, dropshippers can start their dropshipping businesses immediately, for free. AliExpress dropshipping is possible even without contacting the supplier, and getting started is as simple as navigating onto the platform and browsing the products for things you might like to sell. If you’re unsure about how to select the right products, another benefit of using the AliExpress marketplace for your dropshipping business is that AliExpress products are trendy. Chinese suppliers do their research and follow the patterns of what’s selling. Follow their lead and do the same. Consider the events going on in the world and sell products accordingly. Notice more and more people wearing cat eye sunglasses? Hop on AliExpress and import a few pairs into your own shop!

This all looks pretty good, right? So what can be so messy about starting a dropship business with AliExpress? Below I answer the most frequently asked questions I hear about AliExpress dropshipping. Being fond of AliExpress, I did my best to provide an honest, accurate picture with objective answers.

What Is Dropshipping?: FAQs on How to Start a Dropship Business

1. Can You Dropship AliExpress Products Easily?

Yes, you can easily dropship AliExpress products. It’s even easier with tools like Oberlo.

Dropshipping from AliExpress makes all parties equally happy. AliExpress as a platform gets its share of revenue, suppliers sell their products, and you make profits.

As a dropshipper, I’ve personally sold over $3M worth of AliExpress products and know guys who have sold even more. The dropship model really works.

2. Will My Customers Know If I’m Dropshipping Products From AliExpress?

Only if they find the same products on AliExpress themselves. There are rarely any promotions in the packages your customer receives, especially if you tell suppliers not to add them. If you’re making quite a lot of sales, you can even arrange custom packages or flyers for free.

3. How to Start a Dropship Business: Why Should Someone Buy From Me If They Can Buy the Same Product From AliExpress for Less?

Because you’re better. Call it better marketing execution, which reached the prospective customer first. Call it branding, which drives people to buy from you. Call it creating a store that people trust, even if based solely on location. Call it the value you offer by providing extra services or content. Call it technology that allows your customers to shop more easily.

Don’t be preoccupied with price competition or even worse, uniqueness. In ecommerce, you will never be the cheapest, and you will most likely never be particularly unique.

Especially with lower priced products (<$100), the price is not the determining factor.

Look at the same product on different websites:

dropshipping - what is drop shipping Dropship

All of these stores are multi-million dollar businesses. Are these companies price competitive? No. Are they out of business? No. Why? Because in the ways that count, they are better.

That being said, your ability to set your own prices and not have to worry about being price competitive should further ease any worries you have about how to start a dropship business. If you’ve calculated that it costs $15 to gain one customer with Facebook marketing, add $22 to the original AliExpress price and try to make the sale. You can increase your price as long as it makes sense for people to buy the product at that price.

You can reorganize your pricing strategy later, but for ecommerce first timers, this a tremendous no-sales relief.

4. AliExpress Shipping Takes Too Long, My Customers Won’t Wait.

Alibaba made over $17.7 billion in sales in one day. The customers from the businesses listed above weren’t concerned with long delivery terms, either. Your task is to define your shipping policy, and then display it on your store’s website in order to set clear customer expectations.

Further, AliExpress packages aren’t delivered by sea anymore, and it doesn’t always take 60 business days. Actually, with the commonly favored ePacket delivery option, it typically takes only 7-14 days to reach the US. Another benefit of the dropship model, is that the ePacket delivery method is now implemented across 29 countries around the world. In addition, some suppliers keep their most popular products in US warehouses, which offers even quicker delivery.

Note: the differences between shipping options are huge. Some suppliers claim to ship their orders the same day with ePacket delivery (delivery time: approximately two weeks), others ship their orders within 10 days and offer standard China Post 45 days delivery (delivery time: approximately two months).

Lastly, choose only the best suppliers by doing your research. If you choose a random supplier, chances are you picked the one with the 2 months delivery option.

5. What About Quality Risk and Copyright Infringements?

You’ve probably heard stories about the ridiculously bad quality of Chinese products. Sadly, these claims are often true. As usual, though, there are two sides to every story.

In reality, you can just as easily run into a bad supplier in Europe or the US. In the end, you need to be cautious when it comes to choosing your dropshipping suppliers. It’s up to you who should sort the bad suppliers from the good ones. The unfortunate stories are well documented. Read them and don’t repeat the mistakes.

AliExpress is a marketplace. Just as I can put any item on eBay, a Chinese supplier can put any item on AliExpress. Just like eBay has had thousands of scammers and quality issues, AliExpress has had its own as well.

Being a public company and hoping for business in foreign markets, AliExpress is forced to do a great job correcting its shortcomings. Supplier accounts on AliExpress are no longer free. Now, suppliers must pay ~$1,500 to have a full store running, which makes it difficult for scammers. Moreover, AliExpress offers a generous buyers’ safety program and hires thousands of employees to check their listings. In fact, Alibaba hires over 2,000 employees to check that their listings don’t contain copyright infringements.

In short, a lot of Chinese suppliers can’t afford to sell cheap products anymore.

6. Do AliExpress Suppliers Speak English?

Chinese suppliers’ English isn’t perfect, but you can contact the suppliers in advance to get a sense of their level of proficiency before doing business with them. Larger suppliers are typically quite responsive. They have sales teams managing your orders and can answer your questions via live chat or email.

7. What Is the Best Way to Handle AliExpress Dropshipping Returns and Refunds?

An easy refund and returns policy is one of the competitive advantages you can offer. That said, be aware that offering this feature effectively can be a bit tricky.

AliExpress suppliers rarely agree to accept returns and even if they do accept them, you don’t usually get notified when they receive the item. Even if the return is received, sending your customer the refund is your responsibility. From my experience, I suggest accepting returns to your office, and if the product is not spoiled or used, reship it later from your location.

It will be simpler for your customers and you’ll be able to offer better customer support.

If your store communicates the relevant information about product features and delivery terms, your return rate should average between 6-8%.

The two most frequent scenarios:

  1. the order has not shipped or is extremely late
  2. the customer picked the wrong product or is not happy with the product’s quality

In the second case, you can apply your returns policy. To reiterate, I suggest accepting the return order at your office or warehouse. If it was a quality issue, cover the return costs and issue a refund. If your customer picked the wrong product or doesn’t want the product anymore — covering the return costs is optional — just be sure to issue the refund.

In the first scenario, it’s uncommon to handle a return by relying on the AliExpress supplier to refund you for the item and then issuing the refund from your own account to your customer. More likely, you’ll just go ahead and cover the refund yourself.

AliExpress suppliers are generally opposed to issuing refunds. They will likely insist that the order has shipped or eventually offer a reshipment. The risks increase when you start making more sales. Try to arrange a refund agreement with your supplier in the beginning because blind dropshipping can cause serious problems.

Avoid pitfalls and errors in this regard by trying your best to be strict and persistent. If the supplier refuses to refund you even when there’s an acceptable reason for return (e.g. the package was never delivered or the order’s tracking status is pending for 30 days or more), apply for the AliExpress Buyer’s Safety Programme. You should also continue to write the supplier every day. You may even consider bombarding him or her with the bad reviews. Changing an AliExpress supplier account isn’t easy, and they value this source of revenue a lot, so the good ones will be responsive. Just try not to get to the point where your order isn’t delivered, the tracking code is inactive, 50 days have passed, and your customer is angry.

Fun fact: I made one supplier send a photo of every package they shipped for me. They literally took pictures of every single order they shipped, for months!

8. Is AliExpress Dropshipping Favored by PayPal?

Being that the entire ordering process has a few additional steps when you are dropshipping, there tend to be a lot of questions surrounding payment gateways. PayPal is one of the most well known and widely used payment gateways, so it makes sense that many ecommerce entrepreneurs might want to incorporate it into their business models.

That said, we suggest you really think this idea through before integrating PayPal too deeply into your business. From a customer’s perspective, PayPal is a great system as it tends to favor customers over merchants. If a customer has a payment dispute or wants a refund, for instance, you can bet that PayPal will take the customer’s word and respond accordingly. All of this is meant to protect the many millions of people who use PayPal to make purchases every day.

In order to create a more stable and secure experience for customers, PayPal has set some precautions in place that can make using it as a payment gateway a bit of a hassle. For example, PayPal puts limitations on the money in your account in advance. These limitations are based on your business history, track record, ability to provide proof of delivery on time (via tracking numbers), your business’s physical location, and many other factors, the limitations can vary. Holds on your funds can sometimes last for months, meaning that you might have to place and fulfill orders with your AliExpress suppliers out of your own pocket.

As dropshipping becomes increasingly mainstream, PayPal is also adapting some of its policies to make it a friendlier environment for ecommerce entrepreneurs who dropship, and there certainly are merchants who have success with this option. That said, we still suggest exploring other payment gateways. Some of our top picks in this regard include Stripe, 2Checkout, and Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments in particular is a great choice if your store is hosted on Shopify because you can accept payments directly with this inbuilt system, which eliminates the complication of utilizing a third party payment gateway. Note, however, that Shopify Payments isn’t available in every country.

9. How Can an Established Businesses Benefit From Aliexpress Dropshipping?

When it comes to dropshipping, learning by doing works best. AliExpress dropshipping is the ideal model for first-time entrepreneurs. It’s totally understandable that an established business wouldn’t change its order fulfillment model and adapt to AliExpress dropshipping, but it’s still worth considering in these scenarios as well.

AliExpress dropshipping is great for quickly testing out new product ideas. In addition, you can add a new product category within a few days and if it proves to be successful, you can stock the products in your warehouse as you usually do. This way, you reduce the risk of stocking the inventory before knowing what sells. Also, it increases your business flexibility.

This article might raise more concerns on AliExpress dropshipping than enthusiasm. Indeed, it’s far from a perfect platform. It’s tough and complex. Becoming adept at using AliExpress dropshipping requires time, careful research, and planning. I still prefer it because its advantages make it the easiest way to kick-off your online business and it’s totally awesome for testing new product ideas.

Even with the challenges in mind for those who are just figuring out how to start a dropship business as well as for experienced entrepreneurs looking to improve their existing shops, established platforms like AliExpress dropshipping provide lots of benefits. It requires low starting capital, and therefore you have the ability to try your hand at ecommerce with limited risks.

There are lots of helpful apps and services available to use in conjunction with AliExpress dropshipping including Oberlo and Shopify. These can facilitate and automate the more complicated aspects of the dropshipping process, and eliminate some of the pitfalls we’ve discussed in this post. With these tools, you can devote your time to maximizing profits through developing the right marketing techniques and solidifying your brand. You don’t have to concern yourself with storing inventory, which only further accelerates the formation of a successful business. Hey Tomas
Great article. I was just wondering if the delivery package states who the item was sent from? Like, would the package state the company name that it was sent from in China? Can I request the supplier to add my company’s name on the package instead?

  • NewShopifyer

When we use Oberlo on our store to import list of products from Aliexpress, do we have to go again and buy it from the seller once we make a sale or the seller on Aliexpress gets notified of the sale automatically and delivers products?

  • Hey @newshopifyer:disqus,

You should order that product – the seller is not notified automatically. For more information check out: http://support.oberlo.com/hc/en-us/articles/207278505-What-should-I-do-after-I-receive-an-order-

  • Hey @disqus_413Z4Vo3WE:disqus,

You could ask your suppliers for custom packages – and they should agree, if you’re making more sales.

  • Adnan Cetin

Not theoric. Its Practical and easy to understand.. Perfect explaining!! Wish everyone could do that! Thank you so much Tomas!!!

But I’m afraid of international shipping and not sure.. How about the product that on sale is ePacket shipping to usa and thats great but one customer ordered it from Kenya and shipment has totally changed ( price and maybe no ePacket at all ) ?

  • Thanks so much @adnancetin:disqus! If the costs are too huge, you could just issue a refund.

  • Alexis Durand

Hi, I am interested in starting with Oberlo. Just wondering, I am from UK, do we have EPacket? How lond does it usually take for an order to arrive to the customer? Do these customers don’t really care about waiting 15-20 days to get there orders? Waiting for my order for up to 30 days, no way!! What do you think?
    Thank you.

  • Hi Alexis,

Some sellers do offer ePacket services to the UK. You can use our free Chrome Extension to identify these sellers (link: http://bit.ly/291DPr4).

There’s def a group of people who care about the delivery timeframes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t operate your business successfully. I wrote a lot about the delivery timeframes and dropshipping outside the US here: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/dropshipping-outside-of-the-united-states/

  • Hi I am a shopify developer i have build servaral shopify stores. I Think this app great as compared to other because it provide daily update of the pricing. Thanks for this article Now all the tings is clear to me :):)

  • Thanks so much, @tahirkhan11:disqus !

  • Calvin Jansen Van Vuuren

This app increases my sales from R2000 to R20,000 per month and growing. Tracking packages is a huge problem however but I still simply cannot run my store without this app. It would be excellent if alien press suppliers could actually give you tracking numbers that you cud trace. I have no idea if my customers get the goods or not and therefore I don’t know if I should extend purchase protection or confirm delivery…spending far too much time sorting out admin that this app is supposed to be taking care of…but having said that I still cannot live without this app.

    Hi Thomas,

Great advice you got there. I know nothing about dropshipping and have done lots of research about it but I’m still confused.

Do i have to start the website first? or
Sign up with oberlo and deal with supplier asking them if they do dropshipping first?

    Please help me!

  • Thanks @dky_che_zul:disqus !

They cover everything from launching a store to starting your ad campaigns (step by step).

  • Dky Che Zul

    Hi Tomas,

I’ve done building my shopify website and now I’m waiting to launch it. The only problem i have right now is the account that im going to use while running the store.

I have paypal account and i upgrade the account to business recently because im excited to launch my first online store. The problem is they ask for company name. My question is

1.Should i just put any name that i like?

    2. Or i have to go and register the company and company name and open a new bank account with the same name as the company?

because when i want to add bank account on paypal business setup i cant do that because the name appear is the company name not my name. It will create a problem if i want to withdraw any money that i earn. Im starting to get headache about this matter.

    Please help me. Please!

  • Hi @dky_che_zul:disqus,

Have you tried calling PayPal support? You can solve all issues much quicker over the phone than with emails or by reading their support articles.

I’d say that you just put any name you like. The company name and the brand name (store name) doesn’t have to match. We had one name on the company details page and another as a business account name.

  • Ruchika

    Hi Tomas,

When the Ali Express supplier will ship the product to the customer they will put the price tag on the product whereas we would have charged higher price for the same product from the customer through our website. How to avoid this kind of situation?

  • Hey,

We suggest putting a note to a seller saying that you’re dropshipping. You can set an automated note on the Oberlo settings page. I’ve also heard that some people just tell their customers that they put a smaller price on purpose to help them avoid customs charges and fees.

  • Ruchika

Thanks. The automated note you are mentioning on the Oberlo settings Page, is it for the seller to tell them that we are doing dropshipping?

  • Yes, it’s for the seller. You could something like “I’m dropshipping. No invoices or promotions!” there. Just to make sure they don’t add them.

  • Ruchika

    Thanks Tomas.

  • Ceefo .Ceefo

given the issue with paypal and placing holds, how can one pay the overseas suppliers if paypal has all the cash for the time period?

  • There’s no way do that, unless you have some cash buffer to pay the suppliers from another account.

  • Ceefo .Ceefo

You are a good guy for being honest. None of these damn courses mention this in their course, it’s always START w/$0.

If paypal is not included as an option for a while, will the shopify payment cart release funds?

What of amazon pay? Any ideas?

  • haha. I’ve heard a lot of people work with 2Checkout, but you might need a supplier-retailer agreement working with them (I used this 2 years ago https://www.dropbox.com/s/zwelp1jpxy62r1z/supply-contract-china-english-chinese-template.docx?dl=0)

You can also try Shopify Payments: https://www.shopify.com/payments

  • Ceefo .Ceefo

Thanks dude. I am signing up to your company just cus of what u stand for.

  • Thanks so much! To be totally honest, I suggest you don’t rush into opening an online store. Take some time to plan how you’ll attract customers to your store and learn how Facebook or Instagram Ads work. Marketing is the tricky part. Launching a store is the easy part. If you need any help, here’s my email: tomas@oberlo.com

  • Eldar David

    Hey Thomas,
Right now I don’t have (yet) an eBay store or Shopify account, My seller account is doing good (Individual) so far and I started to use AliExpress for Dropshipping lately.
Does Oberlo will work with eBay? If it does, how will it work?
I Mean once a buyer purchase one of my products, how does the system recognize for example, where to ship or what to ship?
That part is missing in my puzzle for perfection.

  • Hey Eldar,

We see eBay integration as an additional sales channel for our users. It means that you could source products from Oberlo and sell them through your Shopify store, eBay store and Amazon store.

However, I can’t promise you any exact dates of when that will happen.

  • Jan Blazek

Hi, how do you solve problem with different languages. I expect the Oberlo App to copying the title of product from Aliexpress in English., but what about other languages ? Are there some ways how to change the title to any other language ? Does my new title stick to the product ID forever ?automatic or manual, does not matter.. thank you Hans

  • Hey Jan, Oberlo imports products in English. We don’t support other languages, but you can display your products in different languages using translations apps: https://apps.shopify.com/search/query?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=translate

  • Jan Blazek

As I could realise, Aliexpress has millions of products and their titles are sometimes even in English little weird. Can`t imagine the process of translation into Czech language. So there is no such a toll for re-writting?

Probably will have to give a try with the translator..
    Thank you for your answer,

  • Kazaa L

  • @tanyaYT1

Thanks so much for the article, Tomas! There are many articles about private labelling and your articles are much appreciated!

I heard from other experienced seller that they rarely communicate with the Aliexpress supplier that I don’t understand. My concers are that some products come with Chinese manual and terrible packaging, and I have asked for supplier to send over the packaging image one by one. My question is – 1. Is it the practice you follow as well? Asking the packaging image? 2. Up to how many quantity that you’d ask them to brand it. – Either ‘print a logo’ or have a custom packaging. FYI, I am selling accessories so consider the packaging is important if it makes econimical sense.

  • Thomas Lopez

Thanks for this good article ! I will try drop-shipping in France, for now I just have a catalog of the best products on Aliexpress, if you guys want to check it: http://www.jrdesign.fr/aliexpress/

  • @tanyayt1:disqus, you can read more about the packages on the Oberlo forum here: http://ask.oberlo.com/d/553-price-on-the-parcel

I believe they could brand a single package, if you paid them for that. So it’s a matter of discussions.

  • Josh Barnard

Do you know what the tax implications are for doing an eCommerce business while dropshipping with Aliexpress?

  • Hey Josh,

It really depends on your business location. You might want to reach out to other dropshippers from your country at ask.oberlo.com I’m sure most of them have already figured this out.

  • Naimad

Question 1) Some items are designed for a different market than I cater to, can changes be made? For example, on a stage light the data connector must be 5 pin DMX in the USA. Many of the items I see are called “stage lighting” but have 3 pin DMX data connector, which would be used only in the DJ or AV markets. They match in all other ways, but stage lighting users cannot connect to a 3 pin data port in the USA. How do I get that modification and keep it that way consistantly? Question 2) I do not want to sell an item with a Chinese Brand Name. How do I arrange to have my own brand name applied to the product, and keep it that way consistantly? email: ddelaney@lehighdim.com

  • Marie Tatibouet

Hey @tomasslimas:disqus I was wondering ~ how can you tell which aliexpress suppliers have warehouses in the US? I want shipping to be faster than the regular epacked timeframe and figure that’s the only way.

Alternatively, how do you know how much time epacket will take? 6 days is very different to 12 days in the mind of my consumer.

  • You look good Tomas ! I’ve just started a lot to read and get my head around all this, but I can do it. Tks for your great tips. Best!

Or will they insist on getting it filled by the Seller itself ?

If you’re going to dropship on Aliexpress using a cashback service is highly recommended for an extra margin which when scaled can earn you thousands, I see a ton of people who dropship on Aliexpress that do not use this and they are losing money so I did a review of Alibonus on my blog which offers 10% cashback and paypal payments, check it out https://dropshippers.blog/2017/02/06/alibonus-aliexpress-cashback-service-review/

    Hi Guys,

I have a serious problem which has to be solved. I contacted a supplier on aliexpress, and i was able to get 50-80% discounts on the prices. We agreed that we will work long term. However, on the supplier’s aliexpress store, still the original prices are shown of course. How am i able to order the products FAST by always paying the discounted prices which we agreed on, and not the original prices?
I have different amount of discount on each product, so i believe that a coupon code won’t work.
p.s.: I have a .com webshop where the orders will come, then I would order those products from my aliexpress supplier.

Thank you for your answers in advance!

I want to start using oberlo and aliexpress for my current pet supplies store we already have. One thing I don’t see on Aliexpress is to enter our address so the client doesn’t see it was shipped from another seller… Does Ali provide that option? Thank you! Looking forward to start using Oberlo.

  • I am also not a fan of Shopify, however, I too have several eCommerce sites and all drop ship. You can use your standard eCommerce website. No problem.

If my buyers ordered various products/items from different suppliers, are they going to recieve their goods in one package or from respective suppliers?

  • Hey there!

Your customer will receive the goods in several packages from respective suppliers.

  • Most welcome!

  • Glad you found it helpful!

  • Hi there Marc!

Yes, you can run a dropshipping business regardless of we’re you’re located!

    Best of luck!

  • Hi there!

Oberlo works with Shopify platform only. You will not be able to use Oberlo with your own eCommerce website, I’m afraid.

  • Emma Wilson

I’m wondering what dropshipping software allows to integrate Facebook rating and reviews across other channels? Because I’ve made research and found out that in the west about 70% of consumers consult with social media ratings, while searching for purchase. So now, I’m searching for one e-commerce solution that has the support of this feature. Plus I would really like marketing custom capabilities (but that is not so essential right now).

  • This post is very helpful and cleared my all doubts about drop shipping. Thanks

  • Hey! I’m glad you found it useful! 🙂

  • Hi there Emma,

Oberlo does not have this feature, I’m afraid.

But there are several Facebook product review apps available on Shopify app store: https://apps.shopify.com/integrations/facebook

    Hope this helps!

  • Emma Wilson

    Thanks a lot
    I’ll take a look

  • Sophia Lee

Hey so with using epacket, Do these suppliers limit which of the 29 countries they send to? Because for example -yes they ship to US using epacket but when you change to say Australia which is where I am from, the option for epacket is not available on the suppliers country options

Does that mean they are now using their other forms of posting like China mail or something? If we have this product on our Shopify site?

  • Iswardi Abu Bakar

Hi Tomas, this is a very excellent article. Very rare I get a feeling that the writer really knows what’s in my mind.

That said, I do have one question. I just launched my store 2 days ago, and added some products from AliExpress using Oberlo (awesome app by the way). I customized the title, my own pricing, etc, so easy. But how about the inventory? Will my listing be automatically updated when there are any changes of product availability from the AliExpress supplier?

  • Hey Sophia!

Even if ePacket is available in Australia, the supplier may choose not to deliver items using ePacket. This means that you have to pick an alternative delivery method.

I would suggest you to set ePacket as your default shipping method in Oberlo app. It will select ePacket by default whenever possible. If there is no such option, Oberlo will use the cheapest shipping method available, so you don’t have to worry about it yourself. Here’s the instructions: http://take.ms/Srt9Q

    Hope this helps!

  • Hey!

Oberlo has an inventory auto-update feature, which you can turn on by going to Oberlo > Settings > Connected shops > Shops settings > Auto updates > “When inventory changes” (http://take.ms/KhdWP).

From there, you can also adjust settings to remove any items that are out of stock from your store or set the quantity to zero.

    Hope this helps!

  • Iswardi Abu Bakar

Hi Tomas, thank you so much. Noted.

Does anyone know if Aliexpress accepts 2checkout payments?

  • When you dropship goods from AliExpress, you gain more freedom and time to focus on what matters: marketing.

  • Hi there,

No, they don’t. Here’s a list of AliExpress list payment methods: http://activities.aliexpress.com/adcms/help-aliexpress-com/payment_methods.php

  • Fantastic article that drew an honest conclusion on dropshipping. The Paypal backup is definitely one of the largest complaints I heard about dropshipping as well as the shipping times.

  • Glad you enjoyed it!

The shipping time is not an issue as long as you set clear expectations for your customers:)

  • Sayed Elia Sadat

    Hello Tomas!
I have made my online store on Shopify with all products from Aliexpress using Oberlo. I have created my profile on 2checkout.com and I have integrated the payment gateway with my store. Now, for Payment gateway (from 2checkout) to be activated, What i have faced previously, I was asked by the payment gateway company to provide them the drop shipping contract. My questions is that, is this Aliexpress drop-shipping business is normal for payment gateway companies like 2checkout, Payfor or Payumoney? Please help “THANKS”

  • Hey there!

Being asked to provide the dropshipping agreement is pretty common. You will perhaps need to provide more documents to 2CheckOut.com. Did you consider using PayPal instead?

  • Austin Lopez

How do I get around suppliers sending their promotional items with my orders? I specifically state in the comments not to include any promotional items or papers and they still do! How is anyone supposed to run a successful business with suppliers like these?

  • Hey there Austin,

I’d pick an alternative supplier in such case. If you’re not sure whether the supplier is reliable, this article should help: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/dropshipping-suppliers/

  • Sayed Elia Sadat

No I have not. As an individual, can I use paypal and withdraw in UAE?.

Update on 2checkout: They asked me to provide them with my previous sales screenshots. I am a starter how can I provide this? They said they do not support startups

  • Here’s a list of all available payment gateways in UAE: https://www.shopify.com/payment-gateways/united-arab-emirates I see PayPal is there.

If you decide to go with 2CheckOut, you need to provide them with the documents they ask. If you don’t have them, explain why you don’t.

If you get stuck with 2CheckOut, try an alternative payment gateway from the list above.

    Best of luck!

  • Sayed Elia Sadat

  • You’re welcome!

    Sveiki Tomai,
Turiu klausima. Ar atsidarius savo elektronine parduotuve shopify platformoje as galiu kombinuoti du dalykus: 1. Dropshipinga is aliexpress ir 2. Pardavimus is savo sandelio?
Ar idiegus oberlo tampu tik dropshiperiu ir galiu i parduotuve kelti prekes tik is aliexpress?

  • Marilyn Menezes

Hi Tomas, I’m from India but live in NZ, is there anyway that I could target multiple markets at a time, eg India, NZ and Autralia? If so, how would I set the prices?
Is there an option on the store to set the prices in 3-4 different currencies?

  • Labas, Inga!

  • Hey there Marilyn,

There are several apps on Shopify app store that will allow you to display prices based on your customer’s location: https://apps.shopify.com/search/query?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=currency

    Hope that helps!

  • Inga

Ačiū Tomai, tikrai daug aiškiau 🙂

  • Inga

  • Sandy Ramos

I cannot seem to get the chrome extension to link to Aliexpress, it says its pending.

  • Camila Conde

Hi! I would like to know if i can create a website in two or three languages… thank you for your help!

  • Hi there,

You get this message on your status page simply because you do not have any orders yet.

If you’re ever unsure whether the extension is working or not, test it by importing a product from AliExpress. If you can import the product, your extension is working just fine! 🙂

  • Hello Camila!

You have two options here: apps or multiple stores.

The option that is most common for merchant is to use an app that will allow you to translate your storefront into multiple languages. Here’s a bunch of apps that do this job, as you can see here: https://apps.shopify.com/search/query?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=language.

In case you need added customisability to the storefronts in the other languages, you will then need to have multiple stores win different languages.

    Hope this helps!

  • Sharon

Hi, I’m interested in starting my dropshipping business through Oberlo, but I want to build my own brand including my own website. Is this possible through Oberlo?

  • Hey Sharon,

I’m afraid that’s not possible. Oberlo works with Shopify platform only. Give it a try!

  • Argun Boldkhet

Is there dropshipping for autoparts from USA?

  • Hello,

You can check what autoparts the suppliers offer at AliExpress.com or Oberlo Supply: https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers I’m sure they all ship to USA 🙂

  • Argun Boldkhet

Hi, thanks for a reply. I am looking from usa not from china, usa supplier ship overseas

  • I see, thanks for the clarification!

Unfortunately, AliExpress suppliers are based in China, not in the US.
Did you consider importing goods form China though?

  • John Rayan

When we receive orders, does it make order on AliExpress automatically or we should make order manually?

  • Hey John,

You will have to place the order manually – but that’s quick and easy. This article explains the whole process in detail: https://help.oberlo.com/orders#how-to-purchase-items-from-suppliers

Let me know if you need help with that!

  • John Rayan

Okay, I need to know 2 things more…..if possible……Do we need to sign up as affiliate with AliExpress? Obelo can search also in different language like Spanish or Italian?

  • John Rayan

Dear Tomas, Thank you for the replay, I do have a other question which is, Do we need to sign up as affiliate with aliexpress to be able add product to shopify store?

  • Sorry for my late reply!

No, you don’t need to sign up as affiliate with AliExpress.

Oberlo doesn’t have multi-language capabilities right now, so it’s only available in English.

  • John Rayan

No worries, Another question if I can Tomas…….. How to Set individual shipping rates for each product in your store using Oberlo?

  • You’ll need to set your shipping settings on Shopify, not Oberlo. We have put together a detailed tutorial on how to do that, have a look: https://help.oberlo.com/shipping-and-delivery/how-to-set-shipping-settings-in-shopify

    Hope it helps!

  • Drop Hools

    Hello Tomas,

Does anyone know if Aliexpress accepts 2checkout payments?

  • Hello,

Unfortunately not. Here’s a list of the payment methods that you can use on AliExpress: http://activities.aliexpress.com/adcms/help-aliexpress-com/payment_methods.php

  • Mandy Sullivan

Just to be clear as a newby.. I put my products into my shop using Oberlo, then when i get an order I go on Ali express to order for my customers??

  • Shaan Khan

Hi Tomas, you mentioned that the supplier sent you pictures of each order to you for months. My questions are: what did you make sure to have the supplier include in the pictures? And did the supplier send the pictures to you through WhatsApp?

  • Hey Mandy. That’s right!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • This is Fantastic article that drew an honest conclusion on dropshipping. The Paypal backup is definitely one of the largest complaints I heard about dropshipping as well as the shipping times.

  • Hey, we received them over email and Skype. We just asked them to do that for a few days — but then they were OK with doing that always.

  • Brad Stout

Be great to see more explaination of how to set and recover shipping cost.

  • Dakshita Mehta

    Hey Tomas,
The article was very informative.Found it extremely useful.I’m based in India and plan to start a dropshipping business using Oberlo. The two issues I face are:
    1. E-Packet Delivery is not available in India. What is the next best possible alternative? Is it possible for a parcel to reach India within 5-7 days. Shipping time and charges is the main issue keeping me from starting my business.
    2. What would be an apt way to prevent running into fraudulent suppliers. Is there a way we can have a live interaction with the Suppliers?

Looking forward to your answers 🙂

  • Hey there,

I’m happy you enjoyed the read, thanks!

  • Hey Brad,

This article explains how to set shipping settings in detail: https://help.oberlo.com/shipping-and-delivery/how-to-set-shipping-settings-in-shopify

Hope this helps! If you need a hand, give us a shout at hello@oberlo.com 🙂

  • Hello Dakshita,

    1. It depends on what delivery methods your supplier offers. China Post is usually the cheapest. The delivery time is lengthy, though.

If you want to offer 5-7 days delivery, you can go with companies such as DHL or FedEx. Note, that the shipping fees will most probably exceed the product’s price itself.

I would stay with the first option. If you’re worried that the customers will complain about the long delivery times, offer them free shipping – this way they’ll understand that the delivery might take a little longer. Also, be sure to make your shipping policy including delivery times easily accessible on your store.

    2. All Oberlo Supply suppliers are carefully selected and verified, therefore you don’t have to worry about them being fraudulent. Explore product assortment here: https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers

If, however, you decide to import goods form AliExpress instead, make sure to read this article: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/dropshipping-suppliers/ It will help you choose the most reliable AliExpress suppliers.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

  • Abdul

sorry Mr Sharjeel for that late reply i was away from commenting due to work load , i ll answer all your queries just drop a message there at my Facebook page i used to reply mostly queries there https://www.facebook.com/AbdulHannan89

  • Ok you understand you can buy things online via UBL Card, but how can you get funds in it when your customer buy it from your website?

    Hello Tomas,

Great article but I got one question to ask. Once we set up our account on Shopify and then do an order on AliExpress for our customer, the supplier usually sends the product to the address matching the name with the physical address to the one who does place the order online, so how can we ask the supplier to drop ship for us?

  • Hi there,

Your customer’s address (not yours) will be filled in automatically at the time you’re ordering a product from the supplier.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Cassie

What if the product on the AliExpress is an IP and the supplier on AliExpress does not have the license to sell the product, and they still sells the product, will I get in trouble if I put this product on my store?

  • Hey, Cassie!

To avoid running into issues you should do your best not to sell both original and fake products associated with well-known brands, as these are usually license restricted.

Give me a shout if you have any other questions!

  • Cassie

Hi Tomas, thanks for your reply. I saw there’s a lot of anime products on AliExpress which are very cute, the concern is as my understanding, to use these anime characters sellers need to have license to sell, but how can can tell whether the seller in AliExpress has license?

  • David Willyiam

    Hi Tomas,
    I’m based in Indonesia,
    1. planning to set my dropshipping marketplace based in the US and add product to my new store using Oberlo from Chinese suppliers through AliExpress, consider US e-commerce business and market is bigger and more mature than in my country.
-Please give some advice if there is something I need to know.
    2. I had PayPal account for 7 years now and going to use it as payment method for my new store.
-If there any other payment method that I need to add besides PayPal for customer convenience to have several choises of payment method please give me some advice.
    3. If there any tax complications as a foreigner like me to set online store and do business in the US through dropshipping?
4.If there any Japanese suppliers selling their ‘Made in Japan’ products using AliExpress platform?
-It might be a great idea and having great advantage dropshipping Japanese products to US potential customers instead of ‘Made in China’ products.

Really need your guidance and experience to share it with ‘newbies’ like me.

  • Hello, Cassie!

You may contact the supplier for more details, but we cannot ensure that the seller will tell you the truth.

  • Hey, David!

Glad to hear that you are interested in running a dropshipping business! Since you are based in Indonesia, I recommend reaching out to a government’s representative for more details on how to incorporate your business. You will have to pay taxes to your government just like any other business entity. Every country has different laws, therefore, you will get the better advice from any other local authority.

You can see all available payment gateways for your country here: https://www.shopify.com/payment-gateways/indonesia. 2Checkout is one of the most popular payment gateways, therefore, you can try applying for it!

I haven’t noticed any supplier on Aliexpress.com from Japan. However, I recommend checking out the Apex Trading supplier from China, who has a large variety of products and offers the USPS (quick and cheap) shipping option to customers in the USA. https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers/8/products

If you have more questions, drop us a line at hello@oberlo.com!

  • Someone Special

I’m a bit confused as to what oberlo and shopify is or the roles they play in dropshipping

  • Hi, there!

Shopify is an e-commerce platform, which lets you create an online store with the ease. Oberlo is an application, which allows you to easily import dropshipped products into a Shopify store and ship them directly to your customers – in only a few clicks.

To learn more about the dropshipping with the Oberlo app, check out this article: https://help.oberlo.com/welcome-to-oberlo/how-dropshipping-with-oberlo-works

  • Someone Special

Hello so oberlo and shopify has two separate monthly charges ? So shopify is the store Ali is suppliers and oberlo handles the orders ? Thanks

  • Hi, there!

Yes, you are absolute right! You can find the differences between the subscription plans here:
    Oberlo app – https://www.oberlo.com/pricing
    Shopify platform – https://www.shopify.com/pricing

  • Deborah Hood

Hi, I’m wondering would Aliexpress be sending the packages in boxes with Chinese language on them or can you request it not to be sent that way? Also, I’m confused if oberlo is atomatically placing orders for you to aliexpress or does oberlo send you a notification to place the order manually to aliexpress? Please let me know thank you.

  • Luis Trejo

Hi Thomas! I’m from Guatemala and just started an online watch shop, I’m curious to know if AliExpress, Oberlo and Shopify are a good option for me, last time I wanted to buy from AliExpress from China to here it was 60 days delivery and about $1k without taxes and shipping.

  • Hey, Deborah,

Yes, the box will most probably have Chinese characters on it. That shouldn’t scare you – if you customer asks why, simply tell them that your distribution centers are spread worldwide.

And no, Oberlo does not place orders on your behalf. Once you receive an order on your store, you’ll be notified. You’ll then need to purchase the product from your supplier. This article will guide you through the process: https://help.oberlo.com/orders#how-to-purchase-items-from-suppliers.

    Hope this helps! 🙂

  • Hey, Luis,

Your customers won’t mind the delivery time as long as you set clear expectations for them. You should let your users know about the delivery times in your Shipping Policy page on your store. You’ll be surprised by how many don’t mind waiting an extra couple of days for their packages to arrive. Give it a try!

  • Felipe Shih

How do I pay the supplier?

  • Hi, Felipe,

This Oberlo Help Center article explains it in detail: https://help.oberlo.com/orders#how-to-purchase-items-from-suppliers.

    Good luck!

Will you ever allow non Shopify stores? or are you aware of any other platforms that provide drop shipping on non Shopify websites?

  • Hey James,

We find Shopify to be the most convenient platform for a dropshipping store, thus we currently do not have plans to collaborate with any other platform. Give Shopify a try!

On Oberlo, why do I only see SOME items from AliExpress but not all? Example, if I click on “Search Products”, then type in “amd”, I see CPU fans compatible with AMD chipsets sourcing from AliExpress but if I type “Motherboard riser screws” I get everyything but, yet I can find that item perfectly if I am on the AliExpress website. Why is that?

Hi, when you say “supplier” do you mean just aliexpress? also can i post the product (my store) on facebook or amazon/ebay? let me know pls thx

  • Angela

Hi, Tomas! Im a newbie in this field and need your clarification, the Q may sound stupid, though, sorry! Citted:”Dropshippers don’t need to be established business entities before starting their online stores. Though they will need one once they grow.” Q1: How can I be a dropshipper without starting my online store? Q2: are the products shipped under my name? Then I need a business license?! Q3: how big the business needs to grow so an established entity is required?

Q4(not related to above): may I complete my store with my own brand and having them shipped from myself personally, aside from what I source from suppliers?

Thank you for your time and clarifications!

  • There are lots of helpful apps and services available to use in conjunction with AliExpress dropshipping including Oberlo and Shopify

  • Hi there,

In addition to AliExpress, you can also import and sell products from Oberlo Supply marketplace: https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers.

You can sell on Facebook using Shopify Lite plan. As for the Amazon and eBay – you can add them as a sales channel on Shopify, however we cannot guarantee it will sync with Oberlo flawlessly.

I’d recommend choosing Shopify’s online store as your sales channel (not eBay, Amazon or Facebook) – that’s what most of dropshippers do.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Sean,

That happens because we are not able to list all of the AliExpress products on Oberlo search page. That is why we have launched an Oberlo Chrome extension, which allows you to import products to your Shopify store directly from AliExpress website. This article explains how to use it: https://help.oberlo.com/welcome-to-oberlo/how-to-use-the-oberlo-chrome-extension.

    Good luck!

  • Hello Angela,

You do not need to register a business entity upon your store’s launch. You can do that when the sales start coming in.

The products will not be shipped under your name, since it is your supplier (not you) who delivers the item.

And yes, you can have both: your own products, and the products you import for dropshipping, on your Shopify store:) Note, that your personal products will not be connected to Oberlo, though.

Hope that’s helpful! Best of luck 🙂

  • Thanks Thomas for another great article.Very informative and on point.

  • Titus

Hi. I accidentally found your site while googling someone. First time finding your service, so in a nutshell, can you explain why a newbie would need you to start drop shipping instead of selling directly via Shopify? Also, do you know if we can add our own label or logo to the products on Ali Express?

  • Hey there,

You can set your preferences by going to the Shopify Admin panel > Settings > Shipping > Zones and Rates tab.

I’d suggest checking out this Shopify article for detailed instructions: https://help.shopify.com/manual/shipping/rates-and-methods/manual-rates.

    Good luck!

  • Hey Samwell! You’re welcome 🙂

  • Hello Titus,

The greatest advantage of dropshipping is the absence of inventory – you will need to purchase an item from your supplier only when you receive a sale on your store 🙂 That means you will never be holding any inventory.

As for your own logo: that depends on your supplier. You can reach out to them and negotiate the customization of products. Keep in mind, that there’s a big chance the supplier won’t be willing to do so, unless you are a really big client of theirs.

    Hope this helps!

Hi, new here. So I can list any of my suppliers as drop shippers? or only Oberlo ones e.g. Aliexpress?

  • Yawer Malik

Thanks for this informative and helpful guide, I have successfully setup my Drop shipping with my Magento store, https://www.cloudways.com/blog/magento-drop-shipping/ , this is another guide that helped me in it.

  • You’re right! Thanks for bringing that up, buddy!

  • Hello Hazel,

Using Oberlo you can only import and sell products from Oberlo Supply marketplace (https://app.oberlo.com/suppliers) or AliExpress.com.

  • Thanks for this information

  • Juno Gaeia

Thanks for sharing. It is really easy to start a drop shipping business with its low start-up cost. But just like any other business, you have to really work hard to make it grow. Which is why I’m always on a lookout for marketing and drop shipping tips. I’ve also found some tips at blog.dsmtool.com
